ABOUT THE AUTHOR

INTRODUCTION

AUTHOR’S NOTE

1. Serve God as you would if you could see Him; although you cannot see Him, He can see you (Umar in Muslim)

2. He who believes in God and the Last Day should honour his guest; he who believes in God and the Last Day should not annoy his neighbour; and he who believes in God and the Last Day should say what is good or be silent (Abu Huraira in Bukhari and Muslim)

3. He who remembers his Lord and he who does not are as different from each other as the living and the dead (Abu Musa Al-Ashari in Bukhari and Muslim)

4. While a man was walking along, he came across a thorny branch in the way and he removed it. God praised him for that and forgave his sins (Abu Huraira in Bukhari)

5. He who does not thank people does not thank God (Abu Huraira in Ahmad and Tirmidhi)

6. If anyone of you sees a wrong he should change it with his hand, but if he cannot he should do it with his tongue, and if he cannot he should do it in his heart, that being the weakest form of faith (Abu Sa’id al-Khudri in Muslim)

7. Charity given to a poor man is just charity, but when given to a relative it serves a double purpose, being both charity and a connecting link (Sulaiman ibn Amir in Ahmad, Tirmidhi, and Nasa’i)

8. People will not gather to remember God without angels surrounding them, mercy covering them, and peace descending on them (Abu Huraira in Muslim)

9. If one of you leads the people in prayer, he should not make it too long for among them are the sick, the weak and old; but if one of you prays by himself, he may prolong it as much as he wishes (Abu Huraira in Bukhari and Muslim)

10. Use the right hand for taking food, and the left hand for the toilet and the like (Aisha in Abu Dawud)

11. A believer is not stung twice from the same hole (Abu Huraira in Bukhari and Muslim)

12. A believer’s soul is tied to his debt till it is paid (Abu Huraira in Ahmad, Tirmidhi, Ibn Maja and Darimi)

13. Young men, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it keeps you from desiring women and preserves you from immorality, but those who cannot should devote themselves to fasting for it is a means of suppressing sexual desire (Abdullah ibn Mas’ud in Bukhari and Muslim)

14. When you are three together, two (of you) must not converse privately without the third until you are in the company of other people, because it makes the third sad (Abdullah ibn Mas’ud in Bukhari and Muslim)

15. None of you should be alone with a woman unless you are her father, her husband or her brother (Ibn Abbas in Bukhari and Muslim)

16. When a man marries he has fulfilled half of religion so let him fear God regarding the remaining half (Anas in Baihaqi)

17. Among the believers who show most perfect faith are those who have the best disposition and are kindest to their families (Aisha in Tirmidhi)

18. Prayer in congregation is twenty-seven times better than prayer performed alone (Abdullah ibn Umar in Bukhari)

19. God has created nothing on the face of the earth dearer to Him than emancipation of slaves, and God has created nothing on the earth more hateful to Him than divorce (Mu’adh ibn Jabal in Daraqutni)

20. All the children of Adam make mistakes, but the best of them are those who repent (Anas in Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Darimi)

21. Food enough for two is sufficient for three, and food enough for three is sufficient for four (Abu Huraira in Muslim)

22. God is indeed pleased with His servant who, when he eats a morsel praises Him for it, or when he drinks a sip praises Him for it (Anas in Muslim)

23. It is better for one of you to take his rope, bring a load of firewood on his back, and sell it. God thereby preserving his self-respect, than he should beg from people, whether they give him anything or refuse him (Az-Zubair ibn al-Awwam in Bukhari)

24. No man fills a vessel worse than his stomach. Sufficient for the son of Adam are a few mouthfuls to keep his back upright, but if it has to be more, then let one third of the stomach be for his food, one third of the stomach be for his drink, and one third of the stomach left for his breathing (Abu Karima al-Miqdad ibn Ma’dikarib in Tirmidhi)

25. It is better for a man to give a small amount of money as charity during his lifetime than to give a hundred times more at the time of his death (Abu Sa’id al-Khudri in Abu Dawud)

26. Do not consider any act of kindness insignificant, even meeting another person with a cheerful face (Abu Dharr in Muslim)

27. The major sins are associating other objects of worship with God, disobedience to parents, murder, and giving false witness (Abdullah ibn Amr in Bukhari and Muslim)

28. Four traits make anyone who possesses them a hypocrite, and anyone who possesses one of them possesses a part of hypocrisy till he abandons it: When he is trusted, he betrays his trust; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously; and when he quarrels, he abuses (Abdullah ibn Amr in Bukhari and Muslim)

29. He who is not trustworthy has no faith, and he who does not keep his promise has no religion (Anas in Baihaqi)

31. He who goes out in search of knowledge is in God’s path till he returns (Anas in Tirmidhi and Darimi)

32. Charity is due upon every limb of a human being on each day that the sun rises. To act justly between two (people) is a charity. To help a man mount his riding beast, or to load his provisions on it is a charity. A good word is a charity. Every step towards prayer is charity. Removing from the road what causes harm is a charity (Abu Huraira in Bukhari and Muslim)

33. Wondrous are the affairs of the believer. For him there is good in all of his affairs, and this is so only for the believer. When something pleasing happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him; and when something displeasing happens to him, he is enduring, and that is good for him (Abu Yahya Suhaib bin Sinan in Muslim)

34. The one who would have the worst position in God’s sight on the Day of Resurrection would be a learned man who did not profit from his learning (Abu Darda in Darimi)

41. When one commits fornication he is not a believer, when one steals he is not a believer, when one drinks intoxicants he is not a believer, when one takes plunder on account of which men raise their eyes at him he is not a believer, and when one of you defrauds he is not a believer; so beware, beware! (Abu Huraira in Bukhari and Muslim)
