It says in Jeremiah 1:5-10, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Then said I, Ah, Lord God! Behold, I cannot speak: for I am a child. But the Lord said unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou shalt go to all that I shall I send thee, and whatsoever I command thee thou shalt speak. Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, saith the Lord. Then the Lord put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the Lord said unto me, Behold, I have put my word in thy mouth. See, I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to root out, and to pull down, and to destroy, and to throw down, to build, and to plant.”
My faith has been the greatest thing in my life, but it took a while for me to know it for sure, because I was a runner. I ran from my faith and my calling, because I did not take the time to learn more about the Word of God. The truth is, I wanted to do things my way and I thought I had everything under control. But little did I know, the more I thought I had it all under control, the more I messed things up. But God had His hands on me and protected me from my ignorance at various times in my life.

I had to go through something so that God was able to get my attention. Many times, God will allow certain situations to occur in our lives in order to open our eyes. The circumstances may be a little bit painful at times, but this is God’s way of breaking us so He can use us in His kingdom work. I had to be broken this way because I was so hard-headed. God had come to me at various times in my life and I eventually knew that the trial I encountered was an act of God, but I overlooked His calling and continued on with my life. I would learn later on, however, that my life belonged to God and that I did not own a thing. Those of you who read my book will know just what I mean when I say that our lives belong to God and that God alone is in control of everything. My advice to you is this: Enjoy the times for when God calls, you will answer.
We always had something to occupy our time and I believe that love had a lot to do with it. I grew up in a neighborhood where people looked out for each other. These were times when neighbors believed in helping one other, because that was what black people did in those days. I can remember that when my parents killed a hog, the whole neighborhood was involved. My grandfather, Papa Hall, as we called him also nicknamed, “The Warrior,” did the slaughtering of all of the hogs. He would use a 22-rifle and a sharp knife. After shooting and cutting the hog’s throats, they would place the hogs in boiling hot water to scrape all the hair off. We would butcher two hogs a season to be placed in the freezer with the vegetables from the garden that we harvested every season.
