Preface
ОглавлениеAccording to an Indian parable, one day, all the merchants of a certain kingdom gathered at a grand artisan fair at the king’s invitation. The king announced that he would purchase all the goods that remained unsold. One merchant was unable to sell his iron statuette of Saturn. Following the king's orders, the royal servants bought the statuette and brought it to the palace.
That night, the king had a dream in which he saw a very beautiful woman separating herself from his body. The woman turned out to be Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity. She told the king that she could not stay in the presence of Saturn and then left him.
Afterward, Triumph, Righteousness, Resilience, Compassion, Tolerance, and other virtues also departed from him in the same manner. The king did not attempt to stop them. However, when Truth prepared to leave last, the king tried to hold onto it, saying that he had never abandoned it.
All the virtues waited outside the door for Truth to join them so they could leave together in search of a new home. After waiting for a long time (as Truth never came out), Righteousness said that it could not exist without Truth and therefore returned to the king. One by one, the other virtues followed.
Lakshmi was the last to return. She told the king that all the virtues had come back to him because of his love for Truth, a love that no virtue could resist. She also said that a person who is so devoted to Truth can never be unhappy.
