THE GREAT REDUCTION
Vanity, vanity, all is vanity
What does a man gain by all the toil with which he toils under the sun?
A generation goes, and a generation comes,
but the earth remains forever.
The sun also rises, and the sun goes down.
The wind returns again according to his circuits.
The rivers run into the sea, and yet the sea is never full.
All things are full of labor; man cannot utter it.
The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
The thing that has been is that which shall be.
Is there anything of which it might be said, See, this is new?
There is no remembrance of former things.
I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem.
And I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom
concerning all things that are done under heaven.
A sore travail to fatigue themselves with.
I have seen all the works that are done under the sun;
and behold, all is vanity and vexation of spirit.
That which is crooked cannot be made straight.
That which is wanting cannot be numbered.
Behold, I have come to greatness,
and have more wisdom than all who went before me in Jerusalem.
I gave myself to know wisdom and madness and folly,
and I perceived that this too is vexation of spirit.
For in much wisdom is much grief,
and he that increases knowledge increases sorrow.
