It’s easier to pretend there will always be a day after tomorrow than deal with the reality that there may not even be a tomorrow. Dr. Carl Whitman, his wife Jackie, and their children tried to leave their nation’s capital a couple of months ago, but a poorly timed escape has them trapped. Stephen Newhouse is a retired military veteran with a passion for his country and a risky plan which could save some, but not all, from the certain slaughter to come. An archivist with the National Museum, Samantha Carrolton-Logan is on a quest to save some of her country’s history, but discovers a surprising past and mysterious happenings in the former national cathedral. What will Carl, Jackie, Stephen, and Samantha hold on to, and what will be lost as the clock ticks away on the final Ten Days of the world they have known?

From a couple of thousand feet in the air, all looks normal in the capital city this Monday morning. It is late in August, and the summer heat has begun to fade. As the sun lifts up from the horizon, its beams cause the marble of the various government buildings and numerous monuments to take on a warm glow. The gardens are well kept and impressive. The trees are a deep green, with just a hint of the coming color change, and seem too numerous to count. A blue-green, silvery band of water separates the northwestern quarter of the city from the city core, as the river makes its way to the sea forty-six miles away.
The scene appears close to ideal. The serene beauty masks the near terror its citizens have dealt with daily for over three months, ever since the Enemy encircled the city. They await the collapse of their beloved military, and the certain slaughter to follow. The only hope is a possible last-minute peace treaty brokered by the UN.
.....
“Mandy, what the Enemy did to the men, women, and children of Kirkmont, and have done to every town and village since then is barbaric,” sobbed Jackie. “I really want to believe this nightmare is something I can wake up from in a few minutes, and discover I’d eaten something I shouldn’t have before I went to bed, but I don’t think that’s the case.” Jackie noticed she was fingering the gold locket around her neck. The locket was a gift from Carl, and contained pictures of both her parents. Fingering the locket had become a habit in the last several months. Maybe she was trying to somehow connect with them, wish they were here. No, not that, not now. She wished she and her family could go back to better times, and the locket could take them there, she reasoned.
