She just thought irritably that her father ought to oil the door to the office because it was squeaking so much that it was practically screeching. And there was no reason for him to bang the garage door closed like that. It was echoing through the whole garage ...

There were three heavy, hollow booming sounds. Perhaps the office door started squeaking again, perhaps not. Ellen was too far into dreamworld to be able to distinguish between dream and reality.
