Health is inner peace....
Healing involves an understanding
of what the illusion of sickness is for.
Healing is impossible without this.

From A Course in Miracles.

Identification with the body as our home is the origin of all our physical and psychological suffering. Whilst we desire to remain separate from our true spiritual identity, we create sickness to reinforce our belief in the reality of the body. To re-experience God's love, joy and peace, we need to begin the process of forgiving ourselves and others. This will allow the presence of spirit to enter into our mind and heal it.

The cause of all disease lies in the mind and not the body. Disease is a shadow on the body of the guilt in our mind. As we practise forgiveness, the truth of who we really are will dawn upon our minds and we will discover our true home which we never left.

Michael Dawson's inspiration for writing this book comes from his study and teaching of A Course in Miracles. Healing the Cause can be read as an introduction to A Course in Miracles, especially with regard to its teachings on sickness, healing, forgiveness and prayer.

"This an important book, for several reasons. It succeeds in clearly explaining, in straightforward language and through clever diagrams, many fundamental concepts of A Course in Miracles (which, as most of us know, are not exactly graspable at first glance). This achievement makes the book both a helpful supplement to the Course and a practical introduction to it. Healing the Cause also brings together in one place many significant passages from the Course that deal with health and healing, so that those who are immediately concerned with these issues can have ready access to what the Course has to say about them. And perhaps most useful of all, Healing the Cause contains numerous examples of the power and effect of the Course when it is applied to problems in real life."

The Text in particular seems hard to grasp and the practice of forgiveness equally as difficult. Because of this some people tend only to read the Workbook. However, there is much material in the Text, especially concerning relationships, which is not found in the Workbook. The Text forms the theoretical foundation of the Workbook. It becomes very easy to misunderstand the Workbook and read its message out of context without a knowledge of the theoretical framework of the Course which is found in the Text. On the other hand, to study the Text but not apply it through the Workbook lessons is to end up with an ungrounded and abstract view of the Course. Yet, with time, the message of the Course does become simple, although never easy to apply. 'Victim consciousness' is ingrained in our psyches and the desire to blame others for our unhappiness is universal. To read in the Course (see first quotation on page 13) that no one can take away our peace, only ourselves, is a difficult message to accept, but one which will eventually lead us to happiness.
Health is Inner Peace . . . Health is the result of relinquishing all attempts to use the body lovelessly.'
