A cela un disciple de Newton, Désaguliers, répondait qu'aucune loi d'attraction, aucune distribution de densité à l'intérieur ne pouvait se concilier avec l'ellipsoïde allongé. C'était aller trop loin. Clairaut montra depuis qu'avec un noyau solide d'une forme convenable l'ellipsoïde allongé pourrait être figure d'équilibre. D'autre part, l'Anglais Childrey estimait que la Terre devait être allongée parce qu'il tombe annuellement sur les pôles plus de neige que le Soleil n'en peut fondre. C'était méconnaître l'influence de la marche des glaciers et de la dérive des banquises.
