RELIGION. Although ‘religion’ is a positive term within the LDS community, it is usually a negative term within Spirit-filled Christian groups. Webster’s dictionary defines religion as: “Man’s expression of his acknowledgment of the divine / a system of beliefs and practices relating to the sacred / an adherence to such a system / something which has a powerful hold on a person’s way of thinking.” Since none of these definitions even mentions the Person(s) behind the belief system, the term religion (for SFC) indicates that those Person(s) are being ignored, or even do not exist. ‘Religion’ implies that Jesus Christ Himself is not the valued cornerstone of our faith. For SFC, religion is the philosophies and traditions of man. It has the same connotation as the great and abominable church of the devil described in 1 Nephi 13 and 14, in the Book of Mormon. WORKS (see Grace, Sanctification, and Favorite Prophets)

LDS recognize, of course, that “there is no flesh that can dwell in the presence of God, save it be through the merits, and mercy, and grace of the Holy Messiah,” who was Jesus Christ (2 Nephi 2:8). Elder David A. Bednar of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles taught in October 2007 General Conference, “All of our worthy desires and good works, as necessary as they are, can never produce clean hands and a pure heart. It is the Atonement of Jesus Christ that provides both a cleansing and redeeming power that helps us to overcome sin and a sanctifying and strengthening power that helps us to become better than we ever could by relying only upon our own strength.” Obviously, God’s grace and mercy towards us, and our faith in Christ’s Atonement are essential. However, Latter-day Saints feel strongly that “faith without works is dead”, and if we are truly placing our faith in Jesus Christ, we need to bring forth “fruits meet for repentance” (Matthew 3:8). Faith in Christ is considered a necessary part of the LDS concept of works. LDS feel that works includes repentance, coming unto Christ, prayer and faith. Therefore, LDS often speak of works and of the importance of following Christ by doing good works. These good works include placing one’s faith in Christ and personal repentance. Philippians 2:12 teaches us to “work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,” and James 2:14-26 teaches that you must show your faith by your works. When talking about “grace” and “works” both LDS and SFC tend to talk past each other. Each thinks the other group is focusing on one aspect and completely forgetting the other. ‘Works’ within LDS circles includes faith, repentance, prayer, scripture reading, pondering, humbling yourself, etc. Spirit-filled Christians generally exclude these things from their concept of ‘works’, but include them in their concept of ‘faith.’ Therefore, SFC and LDS misunderstand each other in their discussions about the importance of grace and faith vs. works. Latter-day Saints will think they are discussing the importance of repentance, faith, prayer, and service, while their SFC friends will instead think they are talking about almsgiving and serving those less fortunate, and are leaving Jesus Christ entirely out of the picture

“I ain’t never going back there!” Depending on differing grammatical understandings, my Tennessee friend had either emphatically stated that:

(1)He was never going there again, or

Eve: ‘The Atonement of Christ’? ‘Come unto Christ’? – Justin sounds like he’s trying to distance himself from Jesus! If he knew Jesus, he’d know how loving He is, how awesome He is. He’d want to draw near to Him! OK, I’ve got to calm down. Anger does not achieve the purposes of God. Remember God hates the sin, but loves the sinner. The Lord loves Justin, and He loves me. Love is the only way to reach someone. If I can remember this, I can stay calm. Jesus, help me!

Justin: I want to bear strong testimony. “I know Jesus is the Christ.” Why do I feel this tension? Eve’s not getting angry or contentious. I know that she’s the same sect – she’s the same religion as Michael, and he got furious when I tried to bear testimony to him last month. I want to keep this simple and peaceful so that Eve can feel the Spirit as we talk.
