Описание книги

This is the first instalment in the tales of Death, otherwise known as The Grim Reaper and also his rival, Rìghfuil, the Blood King. This volume focuses on Meraud, the youngest of the immortal Portents, who is in the service of Death. As an immortal, destined to bear witness to the tragic deaths of humans throughout eternity, her emotions are finally tested. Not only does she experience love for another Portent called Fear, she also feels mercy for a human named Dale. It is her mercy, combined with her reckless decision, that ultimately could deliver Dale, a fate worse than Death. Meraud's difficult lesson is the first rule of the Portent existence. No one can cheat Death.

Отрывок из книги

There was a swirling fog that arched and wove through the dark night, snaking into the mouth of a large, dark cave. Deep within the cave there were noises. Unearthly voices, whispers of the ghostly night, sounds of movement and activity echoing around the cave and spilling out from the mouth. At the front of the cave ornate carvings were scored deeply into the stone mouth in a mysterious language.

Deep inside of the cave, the Portents lounged upon chairs, cushions, rock ledges, all in various stages of repose, waiting, whilst Death sat silently on his throne. There were but sixteen Portents in all of eternity; nine being male and the other seven females. To the eye, the Portents looked exactly like humans but they were, in fact immortals.

Fear had been observing Meraud to assure himself that she was coping since the teenage boy's death. Although he had assured himself that Meraud was managing,he resolved to keep an eye on her in case her reaction would be delayed. He understood the burden that it was to be a Portent and knew that Meraud had been affected by this death. Fear wanted to shield Meraud from the harsh reality of the Portent life. She had matured a long time ago but was emotionally still young. He was drawn by her beauty, her unpredictable spirit and her sincerity. He wished for her to remain as she was but he knew that they faced grief every day of their immortal lives; it was inevitable that she would lose her exuberance. Her sisters could not continue to shield her from the stark horrors of their reality and neither could he. The life of a Portent, was difficult and pre-destined.

"Sad this one. Third child to die in this family."
