Interview with Seb Hunter
How did you come to write the book?
In the context of what happened to Heavy Metal, did you feel duty-bound to commemorate a world that was now lost forever?
There is a lovely tension in the book between the ludicrousness of Metal and your own heartfelt love of it
There was something glorious about it, though, wasn’t there?
Thinking about it, Metal is nothing without success, is it?
I wanted to ask you about Winchester. Relative to the traditional British Metal heartlands – Nottingham, the North East, South Wales – you were in a real outpost
There’s a horrible incident in the book in which two squaddies threaten to kill you. Did that kind of thing happen a lot?
Another horribly compelling aspect of the book is its description of your experience with acid
I was going to say – if you lived in the Metal bubble the real world didn’t seem to intrude at all …
You were quite taken with Glam Metal …
It’s strange: however many years on, it doesn’t even sound like rock music
But you bought Poison albums, for example
You say in the book that Penelope Spheeris’s movie The Decline of Western Civilization really marked the end of the Metal Dream. There’s one group in that film who live in a mobile home, obviously aren’t going anywhere, but won’t admit the possibility of failure. At the time, could you see yourself in them?
Do you think you could put your bands in order of how fondly you remember them?
