1. The two adversaries will be placed twenty paces apart, each five paces from the two barriers which will be ten paces apart. 2. Each armed with a pistol, at a given signal they may, while advancing on one another, but without ever passing the barrier, make use of their arms. 3. It is further agreed that once a shot has been fired, neither of the two adversaries will be allowed to change position, so that the one who has fired first shall in every case be exposed to the fire of his adversary at the same distance. 4. After the two parties have fired, if there is no result, the affair will begin again as before, the adversaries being placed at the same distance of twenty paces, and the same barriers and same conditions being maintained. 5. The seconds will be the intermediaries responsible for any communication between the adversaries on the ground.214
