Dedication. To my daughter Cristina

Prologue. Teresa Madiedo’s dedication to the guitar, could be resumed in three different facets: as a performer, excelling as a soloist, as well as, for several years, member of a famous guitar duo; as a prolific composer of guitar pieces, written with sincerity and freedom; and, as a pedagogue, dedicating her professionalism and knowledge to children, providing a solid foundation and preparing them in their long path towards performing excellence. The first steps are, must probably, the hardest. To guide children’s minds, unacquainted with music and guitar playing, while fulfilling their hopes of enjoying the “mystery” of organized sound production, is the ultimate goal of her teaching. Achieving a basic musical technique, understanding pulse, timing, combining strings in order to produce simple tunes, all this, is resumed in this beginner’s book, in a noteworthy and easy to learn method. Madiedo’s idea, utilizing colors for strings and notes is remarkable, directed towards their quick and solid learning. This method complements all other possibly available publication dedicated to jump-starting young artists towards their future careers. Carlos Molina. This book seeks to motivate the child to learn how to play the guitar. The colored notes are applied to colored guitar strings and to the classical 5-line music staff. This aids young children in learning to play the guitar and to read staff music. We cannot forget that the objective is to make the child play and in some cases he can do it by imitation. The utilization of the capotasto is sometimes used to shorten the guitar neck and the frets. We can also initiate the child’s knowledge of the fretboard. If the colored strings are absent the teacher could place a little colored paper in the nut, as has been suggested in the graphic

Symbols utilized. The numbers and letters indicate the fingers for both hands, as follows:

The numbers inside the colored circle indicate the string on which we are going to place the finger to play the notes with the same color. All the notes that we are going to play in the same string are notes of the same color

Draw a guitar with colored strings as we showed before: Draw the colored notes for each string and write the name of each note:

The staff is composed of 5 parallel lines. On the left side of the staff there is a symbol known as “treble clef”. This treble clef is going to give the name to the second line from the bottom, which is G (“Sol”), and the rest of the lines and spaces will be named as follows: From the bottom to the top E, G, B, D, F, and the spaces from the bottom to the top F, A, C, E

The notes will be placed in the staff in the following order. Do, Re, Mi, Fa, Sol, La, Si

Draw the notes in the same order

The order of the notes will be repeated after we get to the octave C (“Do”) note

We need to add some ledger lines in order to place the notes that we cannot place on the staff. We also need to practice the backward order of the notes

That’s what happens to the notes in correspondence to some strings of the guitar

Notes on the frets:

Notes on the frets:

Ex. No. 1. Count out loud as you play:

Match with a line:

The staff is divided by bar lines and the distance between two bar lines is called a measure. The numbers 4/4 means that we count 4 beats per measure and we play a quarter note on each beat. We must learn the equivalency of the figures. A whole note + 2 half notes and 4 quarter notes

EACH FIGURE HAS ITS OWN REST

In a 4/4 measure we can write 4 quarter notes. How many eighth notes can we draw? Draw the eighth notes

In a 2/4 measure we can only write 2 quarter notes. How many eighth notes can we draw? Draw the eighth notes

Fill in the 4/4 measure combining the figures that you know:

The Duck of the Shoe. Allegro – T.Madiedo

To properly position the left hand fingers, we must make sure to place the thumb in the right position. The thumb must be placed behind the neck and in between fingers numbers 1 and 2. After that, we can continue to place fingers 3 and 4. If the fingers are small we can just place fingers 1, 2, and 3. At this time, the right hand should not be used in order to concentrate on the left hand fingers. We must repeat the exercise placing the fingers on different frets and strings. We must also make sure to place each finger right-behind the fret. After doing this several times, we can start to practice the next exercise, playing the strings with the right hand’s index and middle fingers while repeating out-loud “1, 2, 3, 4, I just want to close the door”
