The jade reptile shattered on the tiled floor at Sir Giles’s feet. With an effort he regained his balance. She glared at him contemptuously, bare feet planted wide on the pony skin. Ah well, he thought, there had been worse moments. At Dunkirk the bombs falling from the Stukas had made the beach drum like a dancing floor.
