A week later Reggie tossed me an evening paper. I glanced at the paragraph to which he pointed.

"The Opera House at Marianburg was on Monday night one of the most magnificent spectacles of the season. The royal box was occupied by the king and queen and a brilliant suite. Her majesty, who wore black velvet and diamonds, has never appeared more beautiful, and was certainly the most distinguished-looking woman in the house. Amongst others who were present we noticed, etc., etc."

"I wonder," Reggie said, "if she knows how much she owes you?"

I lit a cigarette, and looked thoughtfully through the wreath of blue smoke.

"I wonder if she does," I answered thoughtfully.
