20 Ways to Calm Your Inner Interlocutor

Оглавление

All the tricks of the trade in helping you distance yourself from internal chatter can be split into three categories:

▶those you can practice on your own mentally;

▶those you can practice with other people;

▶those that are connected to your external world.

Feel free to choose what works better for you, mixing and matching as you see fit.

Tricks You Can Practice Mentally

1. Talk to yourself in the third person. As we remember, emotions and their verbal form are tightly connected. That’s why the easiest thing you can do is adjust your linguistic settings. Interestingly, this trick is used by many memoirists. The most famous example is "The Gallic Wars" by the Roman emperor Julius Caesar. In this classic talke Caeser tells the story about his life using "he" instead of "I". The opposite is also true: psychologists have discovered that an increase in the number of first-person posts on Facebook is often a sign of the user’s depression. When we address ourselves in the usual first person, it leads only to our getting stuck in a situation even deeper. While an innocent "come on, buddy, cheer up" reminder to oneself is the easiest way to lighten up.
