3.4.1.2 Plasmodium falciparum

Оглавление

This is the most dangerous species because of its capacity to cause potentially fatal cerebral malaria – also sometimes referred to as malignant tertian malaria. Its distribution has become restricted in recent years although it remains very common in tropical and sub‐tropical regions such as sub‐Saharan Africa, Southeast Asia, and parts of South America. It does not form hypnozoites, but sudden relapses (recrudescence) can occur months or even years after the last fever episode because the parasite persists in the blood at low sub‐clinical levels. The merozoites can invade and develop in both young red blood cells (reticulocytes) and mature red blood cells. Consequently, falciperan malaria is often characterised by high levels of parasitaemia.
