This book is based on the critical realism reading group course at the Institute of Education, University College London. The course was founded and taught by Professor Roy Bhaskar during the period 2007–14 with his friends. After Roy’s death, a great loss, I became the course convenor in 2014.

I am very grateful to everyone who has shared in learning and teaching on the course and testing ideas in this book. Many of the discussions among researchers and students, on how they have applied critical realism to their work, have informed this book. Thank you to the 11 researchers who have given detailed examples of their critical realist studies.

I am also grateful to everyone who has helped me since 1972 with my research about health and illness: participants, colleagues, funders and authors in the great range of related disciplines

And thank you Alan Taman and an anonymous reviewer for very kindly commenting on the draft text and also Laura Vickers-Rendall, Amelia Watts-Jones and Millie Prekop at Policy Press, Elizabeth Stone, and the copyeditor Niranjana M N and indexer Beverley Winkler.
