Empathy describes the convergence of reason and compassion. It is grounded in reality and puts abstractions and specifics in proper relationship to each other. The proper relationship between these two leads to a comprehensive understanding of the realities of human life. Empathy is the foundation for fair and just action. The adversary of empathy is resentment. At the center of empathy is the human being. The goal of empathy is to construct a community of fellow human beings.
