INTRODUCTION
No Panacea
ОглавлениеFrom my work as a casting agent for films and TV projects, all the way to working with some of the world's most talented artists, performers, businesses, and production professionals, I've seen, observed, lived, and had the privilege to work through the exhilaration of leading with creative courage. I have also witnessed and suffered from the perils of being disconnected from my creative courage.
Despite its promises, creative courage is not a panacea. You don't necessarily need constructive values and work practices like inclusion, collaboration, and creativity to make things happen or to create value through innovation. You can give orders to people, work in silos, in secrecy even, forcing those around you to execute on your vision without building from their input or taking their aspirations into account. The sad truth is that you can enslave people and still find a way to create value by exploiting them. Yet, it is common knowledge (if not common practice) that many progressive human resources leaders around the world now recognize or advise their CEOs, presidents, and boards to find ways to “engage,” empower their employees and every member of their groups to build organizations that support everyone's growth rather than just the growth of the business or a happy few. Most of us want to work in an organization that offers us as much as we offer the organization, whether it belongs to us or to someone else. I believe that we all want to thrive.
