Other Problems in Thinking

Several problems in thinking have been covered; let’s discuss a few more and in the process reinforce some of the information already presented. In Shermer’s (1997) Why People Believe Weird Things, Chapter 3 is titled “How Thinking Goes Wrong: Twenty-Five Fallacies That Lead Us to Believe Weird Things.” In that chapter, Shermer discussed four major categories of difficulties in how we think about evidence and data (Table 1.1). To illustrate the categories and the problems they present for our research, the chapter will focus on examples (see shading) in each category.
