LIFETIMES: EVEN OFFICIALS MAKE MISTAKES

Оглавление

CHARLES TOWNER was listed in 3 April 1881 census returns for Hastings Union Workhouse as a 50-year-old basketmaker born in Lydd. The census form would have been filled in by an official, so you would expect it to have been accurate. And you would expect the same of a death certificate filled in by John Pearce, master of the Union Workhouse, two days later. It related to the death in the workhouse, on 5 April, of Charles Towner, a 51-year-old cooper of Hastings! It just shows – discrepancies occurred and ultimately (and most unfortunately), the officials may not have cared less.
