Cognitive Limitations and Techniques for Dealing with Diffuse Environmental Effects
ОглавлениеDiffusion interferes with humans’ ability to appreciate the environmental effects of their actions. Humans are creatures with limited cognitive resources who must conserve those resources for when they count. It would be impossible to fully attend to every feature of the world when making decisions, computing all outcomes and possibilities before making decisions or changing attitudes. We have only so much processing capacity, let alone time in the day. As we discuss in more detail in this section, distant and diffuse effects simply struggle to compete for attention with more immediate and obvious concerns. As a result, the diffuse environmental impacts of people’s actions are prone to systematic underperception and underresponse.
