Front Cover: The Los Angeles Region staged an SCCA National at Palm Springs on November 4, 1956. Shelby drove a Ferrari 410 in the race. Soon, the race developed into an intense duel between Shelby and Phil Hill. The two were never more than fractions of a second apart. They had the crowd of more than 30,000 spectators standing. After an hour and a half of intense racing, Starter Al Torres dropped the checkered flag on Shelby with Hill still close behind. Shelby celebrated his win with the Race Queen, Miss Palm Springs Stephanie Bruton and Phil Hill.

Endpapers: The Aston Martin team at Sebring on March 7, 1954. Shelby is in front of the third car looking down. He was teamed with Charlie Wallace. They were running with the first six overall when the rear axle broke, putting them out of the race. Still impressed with Shelby, John Wyer suggested he go to England and that there might be a place for him on the Aston team.

Frontispiece: Shelby’s time at Bonneville led Donald Healey to ask Carroll to drive at the Carrera Panamericana (the Mexican Road Race) that started on November 18, 1954. One of the most difficult and demanding races in the world, the route covered 1,932 miles from the south of Mexico at Tuxtla Guttierrez to the north at Ciudad Juarez. This photo by Motor Trend photographer Bob D’Olivo shows Shelby at the start with officials and crew.

Title Page: Shelby makes a pit stop at the 1956 Sebring. Carroll and Roy Salvadori finished 4th overall and 1st in Class D. The other two Astons failed to finish. Juan Manuel Fangio and Eugenio Castellotti won in a 3.5-liter Ferrari. In 2nd were Luigi Musso and Harry Schell in another Ferrari followed by Bob Sweikert and Jack Ensley in a D-Type Jaguar. Shelby and Salvadori were eight laps behind the winner at the end.

Table of Contents: “The high-point of my driving career was when Roy Salvadori and I won Le Mans in 1959.” Shelby celebrated the Le Mans victory with his crew and David Brown, opening a bottle of champagne. It was also a victory for Brown as it was the only Le Mans win for Aston Martin.

Back Cover Photos

Top: Shelby’s Las Vegas factory continues to turn out Cobras as well as Shelby Mustangs, with new models announced every year. The Ford factory ships Mustangs to Las Vegas where they are transformed into Shelbys. A Shelby Mustang is the top of the line at selected Ford dealers. The legendary Shelby Mustang GT-H (originally made for Hertz) was resurrected in 2006.

Bottom: The last and most important race of the Bahamas Speed Week was the Nassau Trophy on December 7. Stirling Moss (left) won in a 3.5 Ferrari followed by Shelby (center) in the Maserati and Phil Hill (right) in a 4.1 Ferrari. Nassau chairman “Red” Crise stands behind them.

Author note: Some of the vintage photos in this book are of lower quality. They have been included because of their importance to telling the story.
