In 1453, after the fall of Constantinople, a large number of refugees fled from the Eastern Roman Empire to Europe. They brought with them Roman and Greek books that had been archived in Constantinople, and had not been seen in western Europe for centuries. With information and the invention of the printing press around 1450, the pace of learning accelerated in the Renaissance period in Europe.
