Above The Keyboard Dressing
by Tess Williams
After a year of working from home since the pandemic hit, we can all agree that our WFH wardrobe has gone through a style evolution. Last year, most of us dialed into our video meetings with our quarantine ensemble wearing pajamas, and especially with our cameras turned off.
It was an uncertain time and we all found a new kind of comfort being at home, without the mundane Rise and Grind rush to the office in our polished looks with all the accoutrements.
Polished Comfort
Is Key
Admittedly, as a Fashion Creative Director, I do miss seeing my colleagues wearing their well-put-together personal streetwear creations at the office. However, during the height of the pandemic, it was a chance for us to slow down with a renewed sense of the value of quality time with our families, and motivation for our own self care.
With this new mindset, Comfort reigns supreme and is the priority of our wardrobe.
After a while living in our pajamas, it became clear that we all feel great when we wake up and get dressed in an outfit that we feel comfortable and confident in. We have defaulted to casual styling, making quality comfort pieces the staples of our wardrobe.
We have adapted a style that is Above the Keyboard-a mix of business on top and utilitarian comfort on the bottom- the Cosy approach to dressing.
Magic Word: COSY
Fashion brands are creating Comfort and Sporty categories to their collections so that we can continue to stay Cosy and feel more confident and polished at the same time. Fabrics are soft and comfortable, including quality sustainable fibers, as we have become even more ethically conscious during the pandemic.
Here are my current staple pieces for Above the Keyboard looks with the Cosy approach:
The Button Up Shirt
The classic button up shirt is the ultimate WFH staple item. Whether fitted or relaxed / oversized, it proves an easy piece to pull together your professional and polished look. Choose styles with sustainable natural fibers in the fabric, such as Tencel™ as it gives the fabric a softer, cooler, and more comfortable feel.
Magic Word: COMFORT
Comfort Denim
For women, you can ditch your skinny jeans and opt for new fits and fabrics that you can feel comfortable in - straight leg, loose/relaxed fit, slouchy leg, wide leg, and flare leg styles. For men, even before the pandemic, stretch denim continues to be the trend as it is comfortable and easy to wear at home. Choose lightweight denim fabrics that contain Organic Cotton or Tencel™ to be sustainably conscious and feel super comfortable.
Loungewear Sets
Sweatsuits are still the go-to WFH outfit, whether you wear as a total look or mixed together with a polished piece. Designers are offering luxe loungewear sets as to elevate this much loved comfort trend. Choose fabrics that contain Organic Cotton, Tencel™, and Modal for extreme comfort and conscious upgrade to your classic sweats.
Magic Word: LUXE TOUCH
Sporty Pieces
Leggings and Bike shorts mixed in as your ‘comfort on the bottom’ is an easy WFH outfit, as you can pair with a polished item to dress up for more formal video calls or loungewear pieces for a more quiet day at home.
Oversize Shacket
A Shacket is an item that looks like a shirt, but layers like a jacket. It is designed with many different fabric options on the market, as the most current trend is the Denim Shacket. It is a great alternative to a blazer, as it is more comfortable, modern, and trend-driven.
Slides & Slippers
The house shoe has been a highly coveted item as we work from home, and lately it has gotten a serious upgrade. Slides and slippers have gotten the luxe touch with more polished designs and super soft plush fur linings that you can just as easily wear outside your home office.
Magic Word: EASY
Easy Sneakers
The everyday easy sneaker is a key item to your WFH wardrobe. As women have forsaken their heels (for now), the sneaker has become the ever-comfort shoe. Opt to own a few different pairs as options to dress up or down a look. You can look as polished as ever with a simple everyday sneaker mixed into your look for a day at the office.
Accessories!
Elevate your WFH style effortlessly with accessories. Adding a pair of earrings or a necklace to your look is an elegant feature to a formal video call. Don’t forget your bracelets, rings, and watches - while they are likely not always seen, they do add to a pulled together dressed approach that speaks to our confidence.
