Chapter 1 The Dream

Оглавление

Again I woke up next to my bed in a cold sweat.

I had the same dream every night for several weeks;

I am a young woman, wrapped in a cloak and creeping through the long corridors of a castle at night.

Several times I have to duck into the nearest corner as the guards were patrolling.

Finally, after several attempts, I made it into the courtyard, past the guards, out into the woods.

The sun had just set and the first wisps of fog were rolling in, covering the forest floor.

I crept on through the dense undergrowth, deeper into the forest.

After about a kilometer of walking, I finally reached my destination: the clearing of the lovers.

At the edge of the forest, between a sea of fireflies, another person stood and held out his hand to me.

I briefly looked around to see if no one had followed me, then I ran toward him.

It was my friend Raven.

We could only meet under the cover of night, because our families were against our connection.

He took me in his arms and whispered gently in my ear, "Elisabeth, what are you doing here? It's too dangerous for you outside the castle."

Yes these were difficult times, for there was war between the empires.

"I just had to see you, Raven. It's been two moons since our last meeting." I breathe almost pleadingly in his direction.

He looked at me a bit snivelling and took me even tighter in his arms.

I noticed how a tear ran down his cheek. A moment later he whispered, "I'm sorry."

"What are you le...?"

But I couldn't say more, because I slumped to the ground at the same time, with a dagger in my back.

I pondered this strange dream some more until I looked at my alarm clock.

"Arg Juna, get a grip on yourself! It's just a stupid dream!"

I shouted to myself. I squinted my eyes, shook my head, and got up from the floor to go to my bathroom.

I quickly jumped in the shower, combed my silver-blue hair, and put in my green contacts so no one would see my completely strange purple eyes.

The strange hair color I could still explain and dismiss as coloring. But this eye color, that had something of Halloween or Cosplay.

I grabbed my lunch box and an apple and left my house to go to work.

I work on a collage, as a professor of mythology, legends and lore.

After four hours of class, I took my well-deserved lunch break.

I got out my sandwich and was about to bite into it when suddenly someone covered my eyes.

"Guess who's here?" a sweet voice sounded behind me.

Of course, I knew immediately that it was my childhood best friend and dearest work colleague, Lilly.

I played dumb and started guessing "Um Meridith? Joy?"

"No you silly, you know exactly who is here!" She said and sat down in front of me grinning.

Lilly was the complete opposite of me on the outside.

She had long, caramel-colored hair, was about half a head shorter than me, and had bright green-blue eyes.

She only wore different colored contact lenses to costume balls, or on Halloween. I envied her a little for being so normal.

"Hello Earth to Jun!" with a wave over my eyes she snapped me out of my thoughts.

"What, yeah, what did you just say?"

Lilly rolled her eyes and gave me a shove in the side.

"Yeah. You, me to the Triangle tonight?"

I thought about it for a second.

The Triangle was the hottest club in town and you could only get in if you had already been there, even if only as an escort.

Because only then you got on the guest list.

Since my family counted to the absolute VIP`s of the city, no of the country, my name stood pretty much in the first place.

"Can't we just have a relaxed dinner? Or have a leisurely movie marathon at my place?" I asked, a bit annoyed.

I found the constant stares that were basically directed at me annoying.

"Oh please! For that, we'll do next weekend also quite gemach and relaxed, a movie night. Please, please!" she begged with a quivering lip and dachshund look.

To resist this sight was almost impossible. Finally, I buckled and agreed.

"Okay. Fine by me. But only if you bring your 'miracle makeup'against my craters of dark circles."

At first she was happy like a little kid at Christmas, but soon after she was thoroughly scrutinizing my face.

After a short while, she sighed and put her hands on my shoulders.

"The dream again?" she asked a little worried.

"Yes THE dream" I replied annoyed with myself.

Lilly was the only person I had told about the recurring nightmare.

If I discussed this with my parents, well, I would be in therapeutic treatment faster than I could look.

Suddenly, I saw a twinkle in her eyes.

"Were you that woman again? Were you able to figure out where it was this time? Were there any other people besides that vicious Raven? Were you able to recognize any plants or animals?"

"Lil, STOP! Just because you're co-teaching dream interpretation now doesn't mean I have to be your next study subject!"

She taught Ucultism and the teaching of witchcraft.

She sighed, but could understand my disapproval.

"Okay, then 7:00 pm at your place Juju" she said with a sneer.

"Let's make it 6:30pm and please stop calling me that at work. That nickname isn't really age appropriate." I replied to her, contorting my face and finishing my break, still hungry.
