How to Fussy-Cut

Оглавление

Fussy-cutting—when fabric is cut to feature part of a print, and several pieces need to be identical—can create stunning kaleidoscopic effects in your hexagon stars.

1. Print a star pattern onto paper or cardstock. Trace the piece you want to fussy-cut onto template plastic, gridded or un-gridded (A). I prefer gridded.

2. Cut out the template. Jot the star number and piece letter on it (B).

3. Slide it around the fabric until you find a location you like (C). Trace a few lines from the print with a pencil (so you can erase and reuse it later.) With gridded plastic, it’s helpful to center the midline in the design’s center.

4. Cut the fabric ½" (1.3cm) from the template edges (or ¼" [0.65cm] out for a tiny piece). Draw the cutting line (the red dashed line above) and use scissors or a rotary cutter on a flat surface (D).

5. Now you have your first fabric piece, which will be larger than the template (E).

6. Place the first piece back on the fabric. Slide it around until you find the same formation (F). Pin it in place and cut close around it. Repeat for all of the pieces needed (usually three or six). Baste them to cardstock or use Décor Bond (see pages).

7. Here’s how these points will look in the block (G).
