It is sometimes suggested that the incidents of other days which I endeavour to record are figments of my imagination. Such suggestions are mistaken. It is true that none of my characters exist and that nine out of ten of them never did exist: but people exactly like them did live and move and have their being precisely as I have set down. To this, many persons, yet alive, could, if they pleased, testify. Indeed, I can remember no circumstance which I have ever set down (except in three of my books) which the spirit and manners of that particular period did not allow. If you were to tell a youth that, less than forty years ago, six hundred quail, among other things, were served at a private dance in Curzon Street, he would not believe you: but the man who roasted them was once in my service. Times have changed: that is all.
