THE ESSENTIAL INSTRUCTION ON THE THREEFOLD EXCELLENCE ACCORDING TO THE MIND TREASURE DRÖLMA ZABTIK THE ESSENTIAL INSTRUCTION ON THE THREEFOLD EXCELLENCE ACCORDING TO THE MIND TREASURE DRÖLMA ZABTIK 1 1

From Padmasambhava, “The Instruction on the Threefold Excellence,” in Skillful Grace (Boudhanath: Rangjung Yeshe Publications, 2006).

The Profound Essence of Tara

Chokgyur Lingpa

I bow at the feet of Arya Tara.

Here are her gradual pith instructions,

The oral instructions on the threefold excellence.

“Excellent, excellent, excellent”—

The tantra of the indestructible vajra nada,

The inexpressible basis of all expression,

Which manifested in response

to the aspirations of those to be tamed.

The first excellence is the essential extract

Of the vehicles of gods and humans, shravakas, and pratyekabuddhas:

The perfect trust and renunciation.

This is the excellence of the beginning,

The instructions that are the stepping stones for the path.

The second excellence is the essential extract of Mahayana:

Based on loving-kindness and compassion,

Perfect superior resolve is engendered.

This is the excellence of the middle,

The instructions in the main practice.

The last excellence is the essential extract of Secret Mantra:

Based on development and completion,

Perfect wisdom is engendered.

This is the excellence of the end,

The instructions in the concluding part.

In order to practice these properly,

Obtain empowerments, learn the crucial instructions,

And, with totally pure samayas and vows,

Abandon all activities in a secluded place.

Straighten the body and expel your stale breath.

Scrupulously apply mindfulness

And visualize your guru as Jetsün Tara.

Supplicate one-pointedly and develop devotion.

Mingle your mind with hers and remain in composure.

Then, for the stages of the practice,

Think of the freedoms and riches,

So difficult to find and easy to lose,

And think of the sufferings of the lower realms.

With trust in the unfailing results of karma,

One-pointedly take refuge in Jetsün Tara,

Who embodies all objects of refuge, and keep the precepts.

The three higher realms have nothing,

Except the miseries of change and formation.

Seeing the three worlds as a fire pit,

Develop intense renunciation and pursue the path of liberation.

These were the preliminary stages of instruction.

All suffering samsaric beings

Have been our kind mothers.

Therefore, motivated by love and compassion towards each one,

Give your happiness and goodness to them

And take their suffering and its causes upon yourself.

Beginning with your present mother,

Train your mind with everyone throughout the universe.

In order to bring them happiness

And dispel their suffering and its causes,

With the perfect superior intention,

Develop the aspiring awakened mind

And practice the six paramitas in application.

In particular, straighten your body and expel your stale breath.

Focus on the form of Jetsün Tara in the sky before you.

Envision her as inseparable from your guru

And visualize the emanation of light rays.

When your mind is dull, focus it on a sphere in her forehead.

When your mind is even, rest it at her heart center.

When your mind is agitated, settle it in her navel center.

Through unwavering concentration,

One-pointedly focus your mind, eyes, and breath.

Finally, she dissolves into you.

Cut the pursuit of thoughts of the three times.

Rest in the continuity of objectless naturalness.

With body and mind made pliable, shamatha is accomplished.

This is called the paramita of concentration.

Within this state, all that appears

As outer and inner, the world and beings,

Is merely personal perception, like dreaming.

Look at the mind that perceives.

All is elusive and traceless, like a cloud in the sky.

Carefully investigate mind’s nature.

It is not manifold, but utterly empty.

It is not oneness, but vividly awake.

In this state of indivisibility beyond concepts,

Realize the samadhi of united shamatha and vipashyana—

The ultimate mother, Jetsün Tara, Prajñaparamita.

These were the instructions in the main practice of the path.

After understanding that all phenomena are empty,

Train in unborn yet unconfined perception

As the development stage.

Externally, by the Approach of gathering accumulations, and

Internally, by the Accomplishment of raining down blessings,

Purify your being.

For the special innermost path,

Visualize the guru yoga of devotion,

Offer mandalas and supplications,

Receive the four empowerments,

And mingle your mind.

Then, for the Great Accomplishment,

As the expression of the undivided three samadhis,

Visualize the mandalas of the support and supported;

By vivid presence, stable pride, and pure recollection,

Accomplish clear visualization.

By fully perfecting this distinctness,

Which has the capacity to cut clinging to ordinary experience,

Apply the crucial points of body posture and

Focus your mind on a radiant sphere in the heart.

When your mind becomes accustomed to this,

Rest in the continuity of original mind-essence,

Without accepting or rejecting,

Without projecting or dissolving.

When some degree of wakefulness has dawned,

Hold the vase with the union-breath and

Train the wind-path through vajra recitation.

Once the channels and winds are made pliable,

Use the contact with a qualified mudra

To kindle the fire of great passion.

Let the bliss descend, hold, turn, permeate, and spread.

Rest in the continuity of great wakefulness.

As enhancement practices, light the tummo fire.

From TAM in the heart, emanate the light of OM,

Through which the essences of the universe and beings

Are gathered by HUNG and then absorbed.

Focus the mind on the indestructible bindu

And stabilize it with breathing practice.

Bring the immediate instant of self-existing awareness

To basic space beyond conceptual mind.

Through the illustrating example wisdom,

The real coemergent is realized,

And you accomplish Vajra Tara of the changeless three essences

Within this very lifetime.

These were the gradual instructions

On the concluding part of the Supreme Path.

Samaya. Seal, seal, seal. Dathim.

Thus, having received the blessing of Jetsün Tara, Chokgyur Lingpa wrote this down, as it flowed forth from the treasure mine of realization. Atiguhya.
