Confession
ОглавлениеDoing this pleased us all the more because it was forbidden
— Augustine
The truth of the descending sun’s rays slants
over glowing hills & growing crops
radiates warmth along the flagstone walk
across the yard Orange light fills
the town in an instant spills over rooftops
& the stone wall that separates my father’s orchard
from that of distant neighbours The beams fall
on a pear tree that bends under the weight of fruit
& I have no hunger except to flout the absolute
restriction there before me
Who’s to say I can’t scale the wall & nibble a pear
gorge myself till I’m past full or splatter them there?
The round-bottomed orbs are vulnerable
& the raucous call of my scoundrel friends
