You probably didn't need to be convinced that paying attention is a prerequisite for learning. This chapter offers much more detail and, as you'd expect, some caveats and complications.

This is a college-level textbook on cognitive psychology that can serve as an introduction to the field. It assumes no background, but it is a textbook, so although it is thorough, it might be a bit more detailed than you want.
