A Note on the Text

The texts of both the Life of Israel Putnam and the Oration on the Political Situation of the United States in 1789 have been taken from the last-published edition of The Miscellaneous Works of David Humphreys, printed in New York in 1804. In keeping with the principles governing Liberty Fund editions, textual alterations have been kept to a bare minimum.

One alteration is the standardization of variant spellings for several common and proper nouns. On the same principle, I have replaced the archaic use of ours with ours in the few instances where it occurred in the 1804 text. One obvious misprint—killed on the sport for killed on the spot, page 90—has been corrected.
