Chase oversaw the trial in the U.S. Senate in which impeached president Andrew Johnson was acquitted, allowing him to remain as the nation’s embattled leader. In 1999, impeached president Bill Clinton, was likewise acquitted, following a trial presided over by Chief Justice William Rehnquist.
