The eight stories in this collection made their first appearance in 1919 under the series title "The Policy Sleuth" in The Sunday Post, a popular weekly newspaper published in Dundee, Scotland, by the DC Thomson Company. They were reprinted in 1921-1922 by the American Argosy magazine, some of them under different titles. In 1929 the stories were collected, edited and published in book form by the Readers Library Publishing Co., London, under the title "The Big Four."
The present RGL edition is based on this book. It also includes the Argosy versions of the first and third stories, from which the reader may gain an impression of the editorial changes made by the publishers of "The Big Four."
