Оглавление"I've seen a queer thing," said an Englishman who went into the Olysia to join an American officer. "I saw one of your cops beating up two civilians."
"I'll bet they deserved it," said the philosophical officer. "What's yours?"
"I know where the Sante Prison is, Smith," he said cheerfully, "I'll relieve you of the responsibility of conducting the young lady to Mr. Tigiliki. Going quietly or do you want me to use violence?"
"I'd rather you didn't," said Smith.
Johnny heard a startled cry and saw in the dim light the girl staring at him as though he were a ghost.
"Johnny!" she cried.
In his surprise he released Smith, who darted across the road.
"Maggie!"
She was in his arms, sobbing and shaking from head to foot.
"Maggie!" he whispered, and gently disengaged her as a little knot of people came across the Rue de la Paix. In the centre was Mr. Smith, and he was in the hands of a gendarme and a man whom the Special Service man recognised as a private detective.
"Maggie," said Johnny Kelly, and his voice was soft, "I'm going to let that detective take you home—I've got to escort Lex Smith to the police station, and I think I heard him say that he did not want any violence."
