I once heard someone say that Bowen practices passive-aggressive therapy, and there is something to that. The passive-aggressive position is, “I’m going to frustrate you without appearing to do so.” Bowen’s message to his clients is, “You can try and change me, but I’m going to frustrate your goal. No matter what you do, I will not be responsible for you.” He believes that if one can maintain a nonanxious presence in any system, that very style of functioning in itself will have a beneficial systemic effect, no matter what the problem
