Revolutionary (born in 1744)

Micaela Bastidas was born in the province of Abancay, Apurímac. Her parents were of Afro-Peruvian and indigenous descent. Micaela’s cultural heritage always made her very proud.

Micaela spent most of her life in Cusco, the ancient city of the Incas, so she spoke Quechua very well. She married the revolutionary José Gabriel Condorcanqui, who was called Túpac Amaru II. Micaela and her husband were merchants. Together, they had a merchandise transportation business. Micaela was the administrator of her family’s business and she was in charge of their finances.

Micaela was one of the most important women in Peru during her lifetime, because she played an important role in the beginning of the rebellion for our country’s independence from the Viceroyalty of Spain. In the rebellion, Micaela organized soldiers, weapons, and food. She was responsible for keeping everything organized and keeping watch for spies.

Micaela is an example for all brave, empowered women striving to fulfill their dreams. She is a great Peruvian heroine!

“Beautiful woman like no other, Like an angel with a puna cheek she has the blue depths of the sky in her eyes the bloom of a rose on her lips the whiteness of snow on her teeth and in her hands, the whiteness of April lilies. She has a high and wide forehead Serene like the sea, black eyes like a calm night, bowed nose falling over thick lips; long and flowing hair on her back ... ”

Woman like no other (Dedicated to Micaela Bastidas) *
