Объясните собеседнику, как вас угораздило нанести себе травму.

A: How did it happen? How did you break your arm?

B: Do you see those stairs over there?

A: Yes.

B: Well, I didn’t.

А: Как ты сломал руку?

Б: Ты видишь вон те ступеньки?

А: Да.

Б: Ну так вот я их не увидел.

1. «Как это случилось? Как ты сломал ногу?» – «Ты видишь вон те ступеньки?» – «Да». – «Ну так вот я их не увидел». 2. «Как это случилось? Как ты сломал палец (здесь: toe [´tou] – палец на ноге)?» – «Ты видишь вон тот камень?» – «Да». – «Ну так вот я его не увидел». 3. «Как это случилось? Как ты ушиб коленку?» – «Ты видишь вон ту скамейку (bench)?» – «Да». – «Ну так вот я ее не увидел». 4. «Как это случилось? Как ты получил этот синяк под глазом?» – «Ты видишь вон то дерево (tree)?» – «Да». – «Ну так вот я его не увидел». 5. «Как это случилось? Как ты получил эту шишку (bump) на голове?» – «Ты видишь вон тот каменный забор (stone fence)?» – «Да». – «Ну так вот я его не увидел». 6. «Что случилось с твоей машиной?» – «Ты видишь вон то дерево?» – «Да». – «Ну так вот я его не увидел». 7. «Что случилось с твоим платьем?» – «Ты видишь тот гвоздь (nail)?» – «Да». – «Ну так вот я его не увидела». 8. «Что случилось с твоими брюками?» – «Ты видишь тот гвоздь?» – «Да». – «Ну так вот я его не увидел».

Ключ. 1. “How did it happen? How did you break your leg?” “Do you see those stairs over there?” “Yes.” “Well, I didn’t.” 2. “How did it happen? How did you break your toe?” “Do you see that stone over there?” “Yes.” “Well, I didn’t.” (Заметьте a finger – это только палец на руке. Палец на ноге называется иначе – a toe. So (таким образом), a man has ten fingers and ten toes.) 3. “How did it happen? How did you hurt your knee?” “Do you see that bench over there?” “Yes.” “Well, I didn’t.” 4. “How did it happen? THE FROG AND HIS WIVES

Прочтите африканскую сказку, но прежде запомните три основные формы встретившихся в ней неправильных глаголов.

Once there lived a Frog who had two wives. His first wife lived in Ndumbi and the second wife lived in Ndala. He himself lived in a little place between Ndumbi and Ndala. He went sometimes to Ndumbi and sometimes to Ndala to see his wives.

Once a little frog came to him and said, “Come to Ndumbi, please! Your first wife has a nice pudding for you. Come at once while the pudding is hot!”

The Frog was very happy, because he liked puddings very much. He was ready to go when another little frog came to him and said, “Please, come to Ndala! Your second wife has a nice pudding for you. Come at once while the pudding is hot!”

The Frog sat down and began to think:

“If I go to my first wife for the pudding, my second wife will be very upset. If I go to my second wife for the pudding, my first wife will be very upset, too. Where shall I go – to Ndumbi or to Ndala?”

was был; happy счастливый; was ready [-e-] to go был готов идти; begin (began, begun) начинать ◊ and began to think и призадумался; начал размышлять; upset расстроенный ◊ will be very upset очень расстроится; Where shall I go? Куда же мне пойти?

He sat and thought for a long time. And he stayed at home and began to cry:

“Oh! Where shall I go, where shall I go?”

Now, when you hear frogs’ Gaou, gaou, gaou, you will understand that it means: “Where shall I go? Where shall I go? Go, go, go?”

How bad it is to have two wives who make puddings at the same time!
