The door of the living room stood half open, and Stanton could hear Madame’s voice.

Madame: Bijou!1 Where are you, my little one? (6) Under the chair? No. Under the table! No… Behind the sofa? No. Under the sofa? No. Bijou, my precious! (7) Where are you?

Stanton entered the room and saw the old actress crawling around on the floor on all fours. (8)

Stanton: Ahem! Madeleine?

Madame: Oh, it’s you, Albert.

Stanton: What are you doing on the floor, my dear? Let me help you to your feet. (9)

Madame: Thank you, my friend. I was looking for Bijou.

Butler (who had entered the room after Stanton): Has Madame lost something?

Madame: I can’t find Bijou!

Butler: He was in the kitchen some five minutes ago. (10) Asking for it. His supper, that is. (11)

Madame: Will you, please, find him and bring him here? I want him to meet Albert. That is, I meant to say, Mr. Stanton. (12)

Butler: Yes, Madame.
