Chapter 1 Unexpected Friend
ОглавлениеPart 1
It was a beautiful day in California, where we now lived. Mom got inspired to go shopping, something we had gotten used to. She forced me to go, although she knew shopping wasn’t my thing. While looking through the pants rack, we heard a young woman speaking hysterically on her cell phone. Mom approached her to make sure she was alright- and boom, the woman let out all her frustration, her anger and her worries. Not wanting to get involved, I had no choice but to hear the entire conversation. I predicted shopping was not going to happen that day. This is what occurred: mom asked, “Is everything alright?” “No, it’s not. Why do I pay the doctors to help me? Why do I keep thinking I’m going to be alright? Why am I so dense?” In a quiet voice mom responded, “Um, I don’t know, but I’ll listen.” I was now sure that it was the end of our shopping spree, but perhaps the beginning of a new friendship for mom. I stayed to listen to everything, although I was hoping to have an opportunity to leave. While mom continued to listen to the woman’s dilemma, I got restless, but didn’t want the woman to notice. I heard her frantically say, “I found out two years ago. The doctor told me if I had chemo, everything would be okay. I’ve been in and out of the hospital. Everything was fine for a while, now the oncologist called me and told me I have Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I know there’s no cure. I know I’m doomed.” Lillian couldn’t help but reminisce about Shannon. She couldn’t help but think about how her sister suffered and could not imagine having to deal with helping someone with cancer again. She silently asked, “Why does God always do this to me? Why do I always have to be confronted with some kind of tragedy? Why couldn’t I just mind my business?” As reality set in, she remembered her husband, Michael, was the director at California General and offered to bring her there. “I’m sorry; I didn’t quite get your name.” Marisol, Marisol Gines is my name. Yours is?” “I’m Lillian Cunnings Harrington.”
“It’s nice to meet you. I’m sorry to have let out all my problems, but I couldn’t keep it inside me anymore.” “That’s alright. I’m not sure what hospital you were tested in, but my husband is the director at California General and I would be more than happy to call him and see if he can arrange for you to get another opinion. I mean, if that’s alright.” Marisol was moved that a perfect stranger would go to such measures for her. She knew Lillian had to be from another place other than California, or maybe another planet. She couldn’t remember the last person who was nice to her. It was rare nowadays to find a person who was sensitive to the needs of others. “Are you serious? Wow, no one has ever offered to help me before. You must not be from California.” Lillian smiled and responded, “Well, I’m actually from Texas. I’m a farm girl. I’ve been here for a year and I’m still trying to get use to this fast life.” “You’re a farm girl huh? That explains why you’re so nice. People here don’t care about anyone but themselves. It’s so nice to meet someone who listens and is concerned.” Sympathetically Lillian responded, “Well, I sort of understand. My sister passed away a year ago from ovarian cancer. My mom died from the same thing when I was only four. My dad passed away from cardiac problems and my first husband was tragically killed in an accident. I’ve had my share of grief. I understand how you feel.” Marisol realized that perhaps her problem wasn’t so bad. After listening to what Lillian had gone through, her cancer, although terrible, wasn’t too bad compared to Lillian’s tragedies. “Well that’s a hell of a whole lot to have gone through. How can you be so happy and have a smile on your face? Why are you so nice? I would be bitter having gone through all of that.” Trying to be as comforting as possible, Lillian answered, “Well, it wasn’t always easy. I had my moments. I went through deep depression, thought of ending my own life, didn’t want to go on, never wanted to love again, and lost all hope in life. I had two inspirations to keep me going, one was God and the second was my daughter Skye. She helped me realize that life is worth living when you have a purpose. She woke me up to reality and helped me confront my pain.” Lillian continued to speak as she stared at her young, beautiful and wonderful daughter. “She’s young, but let me tell you, she’s full of smarts. Oh sorry, that’s my country accent coming out.” Marisol smiled and looked at Skye as well, then responded “Oh that’s okay. I wish I had that in my life. I have a son who’s in the arm forces fighting for our country, an ex husband who cheated on me once too many times, and friends who all they care about is how much money I have in my bank account. I’ve had to go through chemo treatments alone. Sometimes afraid I would die with no one around, so I thank you for listening. I don’t know you, although your face looks familiar.” Lillian then identified who she was. “I’m an author. I write fictional novels.” Marisol stared at her for a moment, “I’m trying to place the face with a book I might have read.” Lillian explained. “I wrote “Works by Lillian Cunnings.” Marisol took a step back and couldn’t believe she was talking to an author. Not just any author, but an author who brought her books to life. Lillian was a writer who knew how to capture the attention of her intended audience. Marisol quickly stated, “Well what do you know, yes I did read that book. The picture on the back cover of your book is a bit different, but yes indeed you are Lillian Cunnings. How did I not catch that when you introduced yourself? You’re an amazing writer. Your stories just reached my soul. I felt like I was a character in your book. You brought the story to life. It just blew me away. I felt your heart through your characters.” Lillian responded, “Really? I was hoping to grasp the hearts of my audience through my experiences. I wrote about the things I went through in my life using fictitious characters and situations. You see Marisol, everyone has a story to tell. It’s just a matter of putting it on paper.” Marisol’s heart was joyful as she knew she had found a possible friend in Lillian. She quickly responded, “Well, let me tell you I am honored to have met and spoken to you. You are a great person.” Lillian sensed she made the right choice in listening to Marisol’s dilemma. “Aw, thank you, but anyone with a sensitive heart would listen to someone’s problems.” Marisol was indeed thankful but apologetic feeling she had almost taken up Lillian’s shopping time with her daughter. She softly added, “I’m sorry to have taken up your time. I see your daughter quietly standing there and she hasn’t said a word. I’m sorry.” Lillian was never in a rush. The farm life taught her how to enjoy every day calmly. She didn’t see it as a waste of time. Lillian responded to Marisol’s statement, “Not a problem. Skye is the best kid anyone could ask for. She’s not really a shopper. I have to actually force her to go shopping. She’s so used to the simple farm life.” “Is she your only child”? “No I have Jal, whose twenty two years old and Matt, who’s nineteen. Jal is my little designer.” Marisol interrupted her, “You mean Jal clothing line?” “Yes.” “What a small world. I love her clothes.” “Yes, she’s amazing. God has given her a gift for fashion. Matt, he’s studying to be an attorney. He’s a great kid too. Skye is sixteen.” Marisol listened intently and was happy that someone was actually talking to her. She graciously responded, “I am so amazed by you. You have three great children.” “You have a son in the Armed Forces; it’s an honor for me to know you. He’s putting his life on the line for us every day. That’s an honor. Anyway, I do have to get a few things, but here’s my number. Please call me. I would really love for you to have another opinion before you do anything else.” They exchanged telephone numbers and went on their merry way. Lillian felt this was no coincidence; she knew God brought Marisol into her life for a purpose. He had a plan. What that plan was, Lillian had yet to know. Skye turned to her mom and said, “Now that was a real mouth full mom. I feel bad for her. Please help her.” Lillian stopped, looked up to God and responded, “May God give me the strength and wisdom to help her.”
At home, Skye called her sister, while her mother got things ready to go to the hospital to meet Michael. With excitement Skye said, “Hey Jal, how is everything? I miss you and Matt. I miss everything about the farm life. I wish I could go back, but I don’t want to abandon mom. She would worry.” “Hey sweet girl, you can always come to visit. Why don’t you come spend the summer here with Matt and me? Maybe we can get mom to come for a few weeks too.” “Sounds like a plan sis. Jal, I don’t really like the school here. I mean it’s alright, but I can’t get used to it. There’s too much drama. I liked my simple life. I have a new friend name Sarah. She’s a little strange and crazy.” “What? Crazy? Then why is she your friend?” Skye giggled and answered, “I’m the only friend she has Jal. No one wants to be around her. I feel bad. She’s not really crazy; she just has a lot of problems. Maybe I can bring her to the farm too. It would be really different for her, but I think she could use a little peace and quiet. What do you think?” “ I don’t mind as long as it’s okay with her. You’re such a good kid Sky.” “Oh well, thanks sis. Hey I’m no kid, and besides, I learned from you. I gotta go!” Jal quickly yelled, “Wait, are you still painting?” “Yes I am. My art teacher wants to enter some of my paintings in a state wide competition. We’ll see how that goes. Anyway sis, I really have to go. Love you.” “Right back at ya kid.” “I’m no kid.”
Skye missed her home in the country every time she spoke to her sister and brother. She loved being around her horses and having the freedom to ride. Although she loved her new and beautiful home, it didn’t compare to the quality of life she had back in Texas. For now she didn’t want to abandon her mom who would worry about her. She didn’t mind sacrificing a little, knowing her mom had sacrificed so much for her children.
Skye decided to continue working on her paintings once she hung up the telephone. Her paintings always told a story about her farm life. They captured every detail as she remembered it. As she painted, Lillian let her know that she was going to the hospital to meet Michael. She needed to talk to him concerning Marisol. This matter couldn’t wait. It had to be done immediately. She didn’t know how much time Marisol had, but she wanted to make sure to get her in to see the oncologist as soon as possible. She only wished she could have done the same for her sister Shannon. Lillian felt that God had given her an opportunity to help someone and she didn’t want to procrastinate. She prayed and asked God for wisdom and strength. She knew she was going to need it.
As Lillian met her husband, she explained the entire situation to him. Michael loved his wife and would move mountains for her if he had to. Lillian discussed Marisol’s illness and stated that she needed immediate help. He had no problem having her come in for some tests. He insisted that Marisol get a second, even a third opinion, if needed. “Have her come into Dr. Harry Lanes’ office Monday morning. I will speak to him. He’s our top Oncologist. He’s the best Lillian.” “Thank you honey, I don’t know this woman, but when I heard her conversation, something inside of me couldn’t say no. Maybe it’s because I thought of Shannon. I don’t know, but I feel we need to help her Michael.” “You have an amazing heart my love. I am thankful every day that God gave me you.” He saw the worried look in her eyes and assured her that everything would be okay. He assured her that Dr. Lanes was one of the top doctors in the country and had written many journals on cancer. If anyone could help her, it would definitely be doctor Lanes. Lillian began to relax as she felt peace in her heart. She kissed her husband and was fast on her way back home. While driving home, Lillian felt inspired to call Marisol and give her the good news. “Marisol, hi it’s Lillian. We met today at Marcy’s.” “Oh yes, how can I forget? How are you?” “I’m good. I’m calling because I spoke with my husband. He would like for you to come into the hospital and see Dr. Harry Lanes. He’s the top oncologist there. Is Monday morning alright?” There was silence on the phone. Lillian recognized that silence well. It was the same silence as her sister Shannon’s. “You don’t have to be afraid, I can meet you there.” Softly Marisol responded, “Really? You would do that for me?” “Absolutely! Can you be there by 9 am?” “Yes and thank you very much.” Lillian could hear the fear and apprehension in Marisol’s voice. This wasn’t new to her. She was used to dealing with pain and loss. This time Lillian had so much faith in God that she knew all she had to do was place her trust in him and he would take care of the rest. She knew by Michael’s experience, that life wasn’t a guarantee, but truly a gift.
All day Sunday, Lillian and Michael prayed for Marisol. They knew she was afraid and her journey would be a long, painful and trying one. Michael had to also prepare Lillian because she would be the person helping her. He had to make her aware of the painful road that lay ahead, such as things she would have to confront and things she may not be ready for. He reminded Lillian that Shannon was blessed in that she didn’t suffer for long. He knew she would relive her sister’s dying days and he wanted to make sure she was able to handle it. Lillian prayed for strength and told God that if he brought Marisol into her life for a purpose, she knew he would give her the wisdom and the courage to be strong to help her new found friend.
Lillian decided to call Matt and Jal because she began to miss them all over again. Her mother’s heart was always worried. They had to convince her that everything was going well and that she didn’t have to worry. She was so proud of Matt and was encouraged that he had come a long way. He finally grew up and had a purpose in life—to help others.
Lillian worked up enough courage to tell Jal about her new friend, Marisol. Jal became a bit concerned and didn’t want her mother to get involved in helping because Lillian would become too emotionally involved. She wanted her mom to enjoy her life- and be free of unnecessary pain. Having lost her sister to cancer would cause her mom to become a dedicated friend. Lillian assured Jal that she would be okay. God had brought this new friend into her life for a purpose. Little did Lillian know the heartache and emotional pain that was to come-something she would have to remain on her knees for each new day. Was she able to handle what was yet to come? Would she hide her feelings again to be safe? That was something that time would tell and a new journal would know.
Part 2
It was Monday morning, nine am, and Lillian was waiting for Marisol in the main lobby of the hospital. She quickly turned to find Marisol procrastinating, almost doubtful about agreeing to meet with Dr. Lanes. Lillian waved and smiled to comfort her new found friend. “I was beginning to think you changed your mind.” Nervously Marisol responded, “Well, to be honest, I almost did. I’m not sure if I want to go through all of this again. Maybe I should just leave things alone,” Determined, Lillian answered. “Oh no you don’t.! You’re here now and you can do this. I prayed for you the entire weekend. I know you’re afraid, but God is with you.”” Marisol looked at Lillian in a confused manner. “God? What God? If God were with me I wouldn’t be in this situation in the first place.” “Well, Marisol, I don’t understand why God allows certain things to happen, but one thing I do know, is that he never gives us anything we can’t handle.” “That’s easy for you to say Lillian; you’re not feeling what I’m feeling.” “You’re right, but I’ve experienced heartaches too. I’ve been in different types of situations, and look, I’m still standing. Not only am I still here, but I’m okay. No one is saying it’s going to be easy Marisol, but things are going to be okay. They may even get worse for a while, but I have faith that you’re going to be alright.” Marisol looked at Lillian with worry in her eyes and sheepishly replied, “I hope so Lillian, I sure do hope so.” They got into the elevator and pressed the 11th floor button. As it continuously stopped to let people off, it felt like an eternity to Marisol. Her heart raced, her knees got weak and her back felt so hot she thought she would faint. Lillian noticed the anxiety Marisol was experiencing and quietly said a prayer for her. Finally the doors opened on the 11th floor. Marisol was beyond nervous. “I don’t think I can do this Lillian.” Lillian grabbed her arm and reaffirmed, “Yes you can. I’ll stay with you.” They walked into Dr. Lanes’ office where the receptionist greeted them. “Hello, I’m Marisol Gines. I have an appointment with Dr. Lanes.” “Oh yes, please fill these forms out. Once you’re done I will take you into the examination room.” Marisol’s hands shook uncontrollably as she reached to take the forms. “Calm down Marisol, it’s going to be alright”, whispered Lillian to her. She completed the forms and returned them back to the receptionist who then brought her into room four. “Please remove your clothes and put this robe on. The doctor will be here shortly.” The room seemed so big and overwhelming. Alone in that room, Marisol’s eyes began to fill with tears as she thought her prognosis could only be “death.” Who wanted to continue hearing that? Who needed a second opinion when one’s life was already doomed? “Why am I even here? This doesn’t make any kind of sense. I want to leave.” Doctor Lanes walked in very chipper and greeted her with a smile. “Why, hello Mrs. Gines. How might you be this beautiful morning?” Marisol looked at him with disdain at first because she couldn’t understand how he could be so happy when she was dying. “How do you think I’m doing? Obviously not well if I’m here.” He disregarded her response as he understood she had every right to feel angry. No one wants to be sick, let alone have cancer. “I was hoping to make you smile, but I understand. My name is doctor Lanes and I am going to run several tests on you this morning. You will have a PET test, some blood work and a CAT scan of the lungs. Once I view the films we will talk. I will give you the diagnosis, will discuss treatments, if any, and we’ll take it from there. Are you okay with that?” Bitterly she responded, “I have no other choice do I doctor?” Meanwhile Lillian was in the waiting area praying quietly. “Lord, you brought me here to help someone I don’t know. You have brought Marisol into our lives for a purpose. I won’t debate you about this because I know I’d lose anyway. Please give her peace – let her feel your hand in hers. Let her not feel alone right now.” As she quietly prayed, doctor Lanes came out to talk to her. “Hi Lillian, your friend will be going for several tests today. I can’t really give any diagnosis now. Once I get the results, I’ll let you know what’s going on.” Doctor Lanes looked at Lillian and quietly asked, “Why this concern for this person you don’t know?” Lillian looked at him intently and replied, “Because I never say no to God. You may not understand, but God allowed me to meet Marisol so that I can help her. I couldn’t help Shannon, it was too late, but I can help Marisol. She has no one. I had no one at one time, so I understand. If I have been given an opportunity to help her, then why not?” “You have a huge heart Lillian. Thank you for bringing her. She’s bitter about this whole situation, but I’m going to do everything in my power, medically, to help her.” “That’s all I ask. The rest is up to God.” Doctor Lanes smiled and walked away.
As Marisol was taken for her tests, she continued to be apprehensive. “Why go through all of this again when I know it’s final? Why am I even wasting my time? Why did I let a complete stranger convince me to do this? Have I lost my mind? There is no hope for me. I’m going to die and I’m scared.” Suddenly she felt the technician roll her into the room and say, “Marisol Gines, correct?” “Yes.” “Have you ever had a CAT scan before?” “Absolutely! I’m no stranger to this.” “Okay. This will take about ten minutes. Are you alright?” “I’m fine, thanks.” As she heard the sound of the machine, she couldn’t help but ask, “Why me? Why did it have to happen to me? I knew so many people with cancer, but I never thought it would happen to me. I’ve done nothing to anyone. I’ve always extended my hand. I’ve always allowed people to walk all over me and never did anything about it. This is what life has to offer, sickness, pain and misery? I just don’t get it.” She finally heard, “All done Ms. Gines. You did great.” She looked at him as if to say, “I didn’t do anything but lay here.” She was taken back into her room, where she waited anxiously for the results to come back. Doctor Lanes walked in and said, “Ms. Gines, I just received the results and this is the story. You have a mass in your right lung, but the good news is that we can shrink it through aggressive chemo. We have to treat it aggressively because we don’t want it to mastastersize. At this point it hasn’t spread and that’s good. I know you’ve been through chemo already, so you know what the side effects are. You know what the course is. I’d like to admit you today and begin treatments tomorrow, if that’s okay.” She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. She was in complete shock. “You mean to tell me that I only have one mass? North Central told me I had several masses.” Doctor Lanes assured her by saying, “I don’t know what North Central saw, I can only tell you what we see right here. Let me show you.” As he showed Marisol the films, he explained in detail where the mass was, why aggressive chemo was needed, and that after her treatment they would repeat a CAT scan, to make sure the chemo was working. This news gave Marisol a bit of hope. She could see how Doctor Lanes was compassionate and real. He was a no nonsense type of doctor who wanted the best for his patients. She felt somewhat better about her illness. She wondered if Lillian’s prayers had anything to do with this miracle.
While Lillian waited in the lobby, Jal called to make sure her mom was okay. “Hi Jal, aren’t you working?” “Yes mom I’m working, but I wanted to make sure you were okay.” “I’m fine. I still don’t have any news. I’m still waiting. I’m praying everything goes well.” “Mom, hold on to your faith. I’m sure everything will be alright. She has cancer, so you know it’s not going to be easy. I wanted to tell you something but I’ll wait till tonight.” “No sweetie, tell me now. Don’t get off the phone yet, I need to talk.” “But I don’t think it’s the time for me to tell you right now.” “Please Jal, stop playing around and just tell me.” “Well ok. Do you remember Thomas Harris? You know the young man that came from New York to purchase some of my clothing line?” “Yes I do. What a nice young man. What about him?” “Well mom, he’s here again and he asked me out on a date tomorrow night. What should I do?” “Let’s see Jal, you liked him from the very first time you saw him, you thought he was a nice young man, you liked how he was professional about his work and you thought he was cute. Sounds like you like him to me, but then again, I may not know anything. Silly girl, it’s a date, not marriage.” “Oh mom, I’m a little nervous about this.” “Rightfully so, but it’s perfectly normal to be nervous. I got nervous every time Michael was around. I’d pretend not to care, but I really did. What I’m trying to say honey is that if you like him, then give it a try. It’s only a date anyway. If you find that you don’t like him then you won’t have to ever go out with him again. Understand?” “Thanks mom. I will.” “Don’t be stubborn like your mama was. I almost lost Michael.” Doctor Lanes walked out to find Lillian talking on her cell phone. “Huh um, Lillian.” She realized Doctor Lanes had called her name and hung up without saying goodbye. “Oh I’m sorry Harry, I was talking to Jal.” “Not a problem. Everything’s done. The CAT scan showed a mass on her right lung. Nothing we haven’t dealt with before. I’m admitting her today so I treating her tomorrow morning. She’ll have one course of aggressive chemo; we’ll retest her and take it from there. We can beat this thing Lillian if she’s determined and if she complies with everything I ask her to do. I know you’ve agreed to be beside her through this entire journey, but I want to warn you that at times it’s going to seem like she won’t make it. It’s going to be rough for her, so I need you to be her coach and keep positive.” Lillian was now reliving the day Michael spoke to her about Shannon. She now knew God was preparing her back then for the people she would be helping in the future. Her heart raced and she felt faint, but she had to get control of her emotions and realize that she had to be a supportive friend to someone she didn’t quite know. There was no way she could turn back now. She found herself saying, “I’ll be a true friend till the end Harry. I will keep positive and I will not let her down. Count on me.” Doctor Lanes smiled and once again said, “You have a huge heart. Michael should be very proud.” He walked away and there remained Lillian, open and willing to do what God would call her to do these next few months.
Part 3
Two weeks later, while Skye sat in her Health class listening to Mrs. Brown discussing drugs and tobacco, Isaac, a senior who seemed to be repeating the class for the second time, was the class clown. Skye completely understood why he would be repeating the class, he didn’t take anything seriously. Mrs. Brown had enough of him and had asked him to leave and go see the Dean. For sure he was in trouble. She thought of how, back home, none of this would be happen in the classroom. Everyone had to pay attention and do well despite the many interruptions. It dawned on her how many teenagers took school for granted. She asked to use the bathroom to get a break from the chaos in class. While walking in the hall she saw Sarah. “Hey, aren’t you supposed to be in class?” “Who cares about class Skye? My dad can buy all these teachers. I can decide not to attend school for a year and still pass all my classes.” “Wow, well that’s not too wise. How could your dad buy the teachers? What do you mean?” “Hello!!! Skye, you’re really naïve. You know, like pay them off.” Skye shook her head in disbelief. “Oh, that would definitely be bad for you though.” “Really? Why?” Skye looked at Sarah as if to say “duh.” How are you going to get a job if you don’t know anything? In the real world Sarah you need skills, you need knowledge. Money isn’t going to buy your way through everything in life.” “Oh well, it sure as hell has gotten me this far.” “I can’t continue listening to this Sarah. I have to get back to class. I thought I needed a break from class, but this is worse.” “Weren’t you going to the bathroom?” “No, I just needed a break from Health class, but now I need a break from you. I don’t know which is worse.” “What do you mean?” “Sarah, you’re 17 years old, you never attend your classes, you care about nothing, you have no friends, you roam the halls all day and all you do is complain? What are you complaining about?” “You don’t know my life, and you sure as hell don’t know me. That’s the problem Skye, everyone judges me.” “I’m not judging you Sarah, if you haven’t noticed, I’m your only friend. I deal with your mess every day. I don’t mind helping you, but come on do something for yourself.” Sarah disregarded what Skye said and asked, “Can I come over today Skye?” “I have lots of homework. Two tests to study for and one project to finish. Some of us attend class and learn.” Skye noticed the look on Sarah’s face and softened her heart. “Yeah you can come over, but bring your books. Maybe you can study too.” “Yeah, okay. But I don’t see the point.” Skye ignored her last comment as it was brainless and absurd. She couldn’t wait for the school day to end so she could go home and call Casey, her best friend. During lunch, Sarah managed to find Skye, who seemed to be hiding. She wished she could become invisible, but Sarah saw her. “Skye, do you mind if I sit here?” “Nope! Go right ahead.” “Are you going to start treating me like the rest of them?” “Of course not Sarah, but you’re too old to act like you’re ten. You don’t want to have to depend on “daddy”, for the rest of your life. There’s going to come a time when you’re going to want to be independent, do things, explore things, and that’s not going to happen as long as you have “daddy” running your life.” Sarah listened intently as Skye spoke. She realized that Skye was a true friend. She sat and said, “I don’t want to depend on my dad for the rest of my life, but he tells me all the time that I don’t have to worry about school. My uncle, whom I hate with a passion, lives with us. He tells me I don’t need a profession because we are very wealthy and can live off of our money. He does nothing and lives off my dad’s money. He’s always drunk.” Skye didn’t realize how bad Sarah’s situation was at home. She felt sorry for her and felt God brought Sarah into her life. She thought that maybe God brought her to California to help Sarah as she was her only true friend. “Well I would never tell you to disrespect an adult, but your uncle is truly dense and his life style is just meaningless. You have to be better than that Sarah. You must have a purpose in life. Tell me, what things do you like to do? I mean, like if you could be anything in the world, what would it be?” Sarah replied, “A princess.” Skye looked at her as if to say, “You’ve got to be kidding me. Skye replied, “Come on, really?” “Okay, okay, I love to dance. I took ballet when I was little but when my mom passed away everything just stopped. Dad married some witch who hates my guts and doesn’t care about me at all. My piano lessons, ballet lessons and voice lessons just halted. So all I have is school. I hate school.” “No Sarah, love school. Let school be your best friend. Let me tell you why. Don’t you see that you don’t need to pay for dancing or voice; you can do that right here. All you have to do is go to your counselor tell him to put you in chorus and put in dance instead of PE. I’ll go with you. Who’s your counselor?” “Mr. Campbell.” “Well what are we waiting for? Let’s go!” Skye managed to see Mr. Campbell and spoke with him while Sarah listened. He was able to get Sarah into Chorus and transferred her from PE into dance. He was willing to do anything that would help Sarah and make her attend class. He worked a miracle. Skye convinced Mr. Campbell that this would be an incentive for her to come to school and do well. He agreed, but he couldn’t understand how a sixteen year old girl could be so wise and be concerned for a fellow student. He was indeed taken back by Skye. She was indeed a very different teenager. “You have a great friend there Sarah.” She looked at Skye and agreed. “Thanks so much Skye. I didn’t think of that.” “Oh it’s okay. Now all you need is your leotard and dancing shoes.” They both laughed. “Really thank you. No one has ever done anything nice for me.” “Well then, consider this the first time.” “Thank you so much.” Skye could see the appreciation in her friend’s eyes.
When Skye got home from school she found a note on the refrigerator door from her mom. “Hi sweetie, I won’t be home till late. I’m at the hospital with Marisol. I left you something to eat in the refrigerator. If you need anything text me or call dad. He’ll be home around six. I also left $40.00 on the table just in case you want to order something to eat later. Love you, mom.” “Guess I’m on my own.” Skye didn’t mind being alone, as it gave her time to study and work on her art pieces that would be entered into the State competition. Besides, Sarah would be coming over and she wanted to make sure everything was done before she got there. She now felt compelled to help her, although Sarah was older then her and a senior in High School. Sarah had a lot of waking up to do and she was willing to help.
An hour later the door bell rang. Sarah was so happy and grateful for what Skye had done for her at school and bought her a friendship bracelet. Skye however, noticed that Sarah had been crying. “Are you okay?” Sarah replied, “Yes.” Skye knowing better, said, “No you’re not. You’ve been crying. What’s going on?” Sarah collapsed on the floor crying uncontrollably.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay Sarah. What’s going on?” Words were difficult to say as she cried hysterically. “My life is a waste. My life is hopeless. I just want to die. I want to be with my mom, Skye. I hate my life. I hate me.” Skye felt helpless for a moment. She didn’t quite know what to do or say at first. She managed to help Sarah up and said, “Your life is not hopeless Sarah. Your life is not a waste. You are worth a lot; your life is not worthless. Why do you say that?” “My dad, my step mom, they don’t want me taking dance, or music at school. They don’t want me to be involved with anything or draw attention to myself.” “What? Oh no, tomorrow morning we’re going to see Mr. Campbell.” “It’s not my dad so much, it’s my step mom. She hates me Skye. I’ve done nothing to the woman, she just hates me. I won’t be able to do dance or take music now.” Skye felt her blood pressure rise as she got really angry. She would not sit idle while her friend was hurting. She felt her country accent come out, “yah wanna make a bet? Your step mama hasn’t crossed my path and she better hope not to.” Sarah sort of laughed when she heard Skye’s accent. “Wow, I’ve never really heard that accent, but it’s kind of funny.” “Yeah well, you never really saw my temper either, and that’s not so funny.” Sarah realized that Skye was indeed a true friend. “Do you really think Mr. Campbell will override my dad’s decision?” “Sure, all he has to say is that these classes are requirements, which they really are. Your dance class is taking the place of PE, thank God. You would absolutely die in PE. You’d be too worried about your hair and nails. Anyway, your chorus class is taking the place of basic music.” “How are you so smart Skye?” “ Um let me see, I listen in school.” They both laughed. “Thanks so much Skye.” “No problem. Thanks for the bracelet.” “Thank you for your friendship.” “Okay, so do you mind if I finish my projects?” “Not at all!” One question Sarah, how would you like to spend the summer on the farm with me and my family?” Surprised she quickly answered, “Really?” “Sure why not. I just have to warn you about a few things though, but, all that in due time.” “I would love to.” “Okay then, it’s a deal. You’ll be eighteen by then, so your dad can’t forbid you to go.” “That’s right, and that witch, my step mom, how I hate her, won’t be able to say a word. Thanks so much Skye, thanks.” “No biggie, that’s what friends are for.”
At the hospital, Lillian helped Marisol comb whatever hair she had left. It was a really sad sight and a long road, but Lillian had been that faithful friend doctor Lane’s asked her to be. “I feel horrible Lillian. I just want to sleep. How much longer do I have to endure these treatments? I don’t think I can do it any longer. It’s too much. Can someone please contact my son?” “I will contact him. Give me the information. I will talk to Michael, don’t worry Marisol. We are going to beat this thing okay. Have faith and be strong. I’m trusting in God that you’re going to be okay.” “From your lips to God’s ears, Lillian!” She lay down and closed her eyes. Lillian was torn, but fought to stay strong. She remembered Shannon’s struggle. Once again she saw how a strong young woman became as frail as a baby-helpless, and there was nothing she could do but pray. She could only pray that Marisol’s battle with cancer would not cause her any more pain. She hurt because her friend was worried about a son she hadn’t seen in over a year. She was afraid that he would come home to find his mother gone. That hurt more than anything else. She prayed hard. Lillian was able to sneak away while Marisol slept. She needed to see her husband and have him hold her. She needed her best friend by her side, because she was falling apart. “What’s the matter Lil?” Crying she said, “Oh Michael, I don’t think I can do this anymore. I thought I was strong, I thought I could handle it, but it’s too much. I see Shannon all over again.” He held his wife. “Hey, hey, calm down sweetheart, its okay. It’s okay to say you can’t do it anymore. You’ve been really good and it’s getting harder honey. It’s okay to walk away, but will you be able to live with that? Harry told you it was going to be difficult. I didn’t want to stop you because I knew you set your heart to do this. Lil, Lil, listen to me. She may die. You may walk in the room one day and find that she’s gone.” Hysterically, she let her husband know, “I can’t give up. She has no one. She’s in a place I once was. I know how that is. I know what it feels like to have no one to listen to you, no one to help you. Yes I had my children, but I had no friends. I can’t do that to Marisol. I can’t leave her to die alone.” “Then Lil, you have to be strong. You have to brace yourself for what comes. All we can do now is pray.” “But Harry said she had a chance of survival, did he not speak truth?” “Honey, every cancer patient has a chance of survival, it’s not guaranteed. We can do everything possible, medically, but God has the final say.” “Michael, why is it that we suffer so? Why did I leave the farm? I left everything I knew for the unexpected. I don’t understand how my sister loved all of this.” “Your sister was one strong woman Lil. She endured a lot alone.” “Maybe God is showing me what Shannon endured through Marisol. Why didn’t she call me when she was sick?” “All of you Cunnings women are very stubborn. She probably didn’t want your pity.”” “Pity? No, she would have never come to Ridge Oak. She realized she needed me too late Michael. There was nothing I could have done but just watch her die. “I thought you were over your pain Lil.” “I will never get over this pain. She was my only sister.” Lillian wiped away her tears and knew that she needed to get back to Marisol. “I have to go. Skye is home. I left her something to eat in the refrigerator. Are you leaving anytime soon?” “In about an hour, I’ll check up on her and make sure she’s okay, although you know Skye, she does a good job of taking care of herself.” “Yes she does. She’s my…, our life saver.” “She sure is.” Lillian kissed her husband and returned to Marisol’s room. She walked in to find doctor Lanes in the room checking Marisol’s vitals. “You’re doing great Ms. Gines. Your blood count is great. You’re responding to the treatment very well. The mass is shrinking. I know you’re feeling terrible, but it’s all reactionary to the treatment.
Aggressive chemo usually gets you really sick, but we will start giving you meds to lessen the nausea and vomiting.” Lillian stood outside and heard everything Dr. Lanes said. She didn’t want Marisol to know she was listening. Her heart began feeling some peace as she knew her prayers were being answered. As doctor Lanes walked out Lillian walked into the room. “So how are you feeling my dear friend?” “Am I really your dear friend?” “Absolutely! I saw the doctor leave. Any good news?” “I think so. He said the mass was shrinking. I’m responding well to the treatment and they will give me some meds to lessen the nausea and vomiting. That’s good news I think. That’s the best news I’ve heard in a long time.” “No, that’s great news. I was thinking, once Skye is done with school, we could take a vacation to the farm. I haven’t seen my children and I miss them terribly. I know you’ve never known anything other than this fast lane life, so maybe some tranquility would do you good. We’re all going. What do you say?” For a moment, Marisol was speechless. No one had ever offered her anything. She was taken back by the love the Harrington’s had shown her. They had taken her in like family and that made her happy. For once, she had people she could call family. “Wow, really? I don’t know what to say.” “Well then just say yes.” “Yes, I would love to go. Thank you so much Lillian. You have been a true friend in just the short time that I’ve known you. Your stories always spoke of true friendships, but you don’t just write about it, you truly are what you write. Thank you so much.” “Oh and we have notified your son. He will be here in two days. I believe they gave him some time off, so maybe he too can come with us to the farm.” “That would just be the icing on the cake Lillian.” They both smiled. “Right now dear friend, I have to get home to my Skye. I don’t want her to feel I’m neglecting her or not giving her the attention she needs. I’ll be here bright and early.” “Okay, but not too early.” She giggled and closed her eyes to sleep.
Back at the house, Skye and her dad spoke and laughed about the things that happened in her Health class. She found the class to be hysterical, although informative in some aspects. “What’s all the laughing about?” “Hi mom, we’re talking about the craziness that goes on in my Health class. There’s always something new. The guys are still plain old stupid, very immature and dense, real dense. I miss Ridge Oak High.” “Well, I have a great idea.” Michael and Skye both looked at her at each other. “What is it mom?” “How about we spend the summer in Ridge Oak? I already invited Marisol and her son. What do you think?” Skye was elated at the idea. “I already invited Sarah. Sounds great to me, but wait, Marisol has a son?” “Yes, he’s in the Armed Forces. He’ll be here in two days. They are allowing him to be with his mom for a couple of months due to her cancer.” “Okay so that means they’ll be a guy in the house with us? That’s just great mom.” “What’s wrong with that Skye, its Marisol’s son? He’s a soldier, not like the boys you know. He’s probably very serious and mature.” “Yeah okay we’ll see. One question, is it okay that I invited my friend Sarah? She has no friends. I think the farm air will do her some good.” “If it’s okay with her parents, then it’s okay with us. Michael what do you think?” “But of course! Right now I have to get some rest. These hospital hours are killing me.” “Okay dad. I’m calling Jal right now to let her know the good news. Thanks mom.” Off she went to call her sister. The conversation between her and Jal was always refreshing. She had a great sister who she admired. Jal was the perfect example of “Exceptional” in every way. In her mind she thought, “Jal was already successful at twenty two, a level that many adults were still trying to achieve. Now she was beginning to date a great guy, Thomas Harris, he was cute too. I wouldn’t mind having him for a brother –in-law, maybe someday. She’s was too busy with her designing and a man would probably get in her way. Thinking aloud, Skye thought, “Wow, I can just imagine her wedding. Her dress would be absolutely gorgeous. One like no other, because Jal’s taste is amazing.” She always tried to get me to dress a little better, but I’m comfortable with my jeans and a t-shirt. I’m a true country girl at heart.” When she came back to reality, she realized that she had to complete some of her school work. She picked up her math book, a subject she really loved, NOT, and completed the assigned problems. “What a day”, is all she could say.
