ОглавлениеScene 5: The Morning After
Dan does finally manage to leave Alex while she is sleeping. However, upon waking, Alex immediately telephones Dan and makes persistent efforts to bring Dan back to her. Dan tells her that he has other obligations, i.e., work, dog care and that he just really cannot see her. She counters each reason Dan offers with an offer to provide him with pleasure while he fulfills these obligations, including dog care. Dan observes that Alex just does not, “give up.” However, Dan perceives this behavior as flattering rather than perceiving it as frantic. He does give in and spend the day with Alex.
Alex’s behavior in this scene provides more evidence for the possibility that she may meet diagnostic criterion # 1. She is persistent but her efforts are perceived by Dan to be flattering, and are, therefore, successful. Thus, Alex is not being stressed to the degree that requires frantic efforts.
