Vanitas

Die Fr­age der Planung

„Wir müssen bescheiden bleiben“, wiederholt Alain Berset täglich, wenn er nach den Plänen im Zusammenhang mit der Epidemie gefragt wird. Es ist ein wunderbares und seltenes Statement eines Politikers. Es ist die tiefe Einsicht, dass es Dinge gibt, die nicht planbar sind und auf die man situativ reagieren muss. „Planen – das kurze Glück des linearen Denkens“ pflegt Hans Hein zu sagen. Der Prediger in der Bibel sagt (Koh.1,2)“Alles ist vergebliche Mühe.“ und (Koh. 8, 17) „Und ich sah alles Tun Gottes. Denn ein Mensch kann das Tun nicht ergründen, das unter der Sonne geschieht. Je mehr der Mensch sich müht zu suchen, desto weniger findet er.“. Dieses vergebliche Planen und sich mühen wird als „Vanitas“, Eitelkeit bezeichnet. Die bildende Kunst des Barocks hat dazu ungezählte Stillleben geschaffen, alle mit Symbolen der Vergänglichkeit und der Sinnlosigkeit des Handelns. Wer hätte gedacht, dass der Carnevale, statt mit historischen Pestmasken, mit modernen Hygienemasken durchgeführt wird.

„We must remain humble“, Alain Berset repeats daily when asked about the plans in connection with the epidemic. It is a wonderful and rare statement from a politician. It is the deep insight that there are things that cannot be planned and to which one must react according to the situation. Hans Hein used to say „Planning - the brief happiness of linear thinking“. The Ecclesiastes in the Bible says (Ecclesiastes.1:2) „Everything is meaningless.“ and (Ecclesiastes.8:17) „I saw all that God has done. No one can comprehend what goes on under the sun. Despite all their efforts to search it out, no one can discover its meaning.“. This futile planning and toil is called „vanitas“, vanity. The visual arts of the Baroque period created countless vanitas still life paintings, all of them with symbols of transience and the senselessness of action. Who would have thought that instead of historical plague masks, the carnival would be held with modern hygiene masks.

Plans are a failure.
