Acknowledgments

When writing a book about a profession and industry in the midst of radical change, while simultaneously working in that profession and industry, the contributions of others to the completed manuscript are too numerous to count. Some individuals deserve special recognition, however, due to the time and advice spent critiquing early versions of the book, provision of cogent language that sharpened the analysis, or modeling exemplary leadership in the real world practice of medicine from which I have learned. Within that contextual framework, I wish to thank Ed O’Conner, EdD, John Henry Pfifferling, PhD, Glen Tullman, Barry Silbaugh, MD, Alan Kaplan MD, Elliot Williams MD, Greg Taylor MD, John Walker MD, Doug Mathis, Zan Tyson, MD, Sheri Spring-Phillips, MD, Charisse Jimenez, Barbara Linney, Van Fletcher, MD, Tom Walsh, MD, the Board of Directors and Management Team of Cornerstone Health Care, and my fellow coauthor J.M. Bohn. Most importantly, I thank Tim, Robyn and Katy Terrell for their infinite patience during this project, and all the patients, nurses and staff I have learned from every day since I first put on the white coat in 1985.

Grace E. Terrell, MD, MMM, FACP, CPE, FACPE

As a career unfolds there are many influences over the direction one can take and choose. The patience of family and colleagues has certainly been appreciated during the time taken to write this book. From the University of Louisville College of Business administration I would like to thank Associate Dean, Audrey Kline, PhD, and Vernon Foster for their encouragement and support provided during my research and writing of this book. Next and most importantly are the management and leadership team of BayCare Health System where I received my start in health care. Opportunities were provided to broaden and deepen my understanding of the interworking mechanisms, processes, and cultural dynamics that physicians and other clinical leaders engage in daily to provide leadership to the front-line staff who work tirelessly to provide the utmost excellence in health care services. Without this experience I would not have been prepared to co-author and collaborate with Dr. Grace Terrell on the writing and development of Physician Leadership for the Information Age.
