If the metal piece is still visible:

• Restrain the pig immediately with a nose snare and remove the broken needle. Ideally a large pair of artery forceps should be kept sterilized ready for this eventuality. However a pair of pliers may be adequate.

If the metal piece is inside the pig and not visible:

• Immediately the pig should be marked with a numbered ear tag. The identity of the pig with the date should be recorded in the medicine book.

Possible future option for the animal if it is to be retained as breeding stock:

• The animal will not be suitable for human consumption.

• Ensure the animal tag is correctly placed.

• Check the animal’s health regularly.

• Check the tag regularly and replace if necessary.

• If a different tag number is used, record the new number.

• Once the animal’s breeding life is finished the animal must not go to slaughter for human consumption. The reason is that pieces of metal move inside the body and within a few weeks it will have moved from the injection site (i.e. the neck) to any part of the body. Practitioners should be very wary of trying to find the needle, even with ultrasound guidance, as it is extremely difficult and the welfare of the pig will be compromised.

If the pig is of adequate size and has not received medicine which has too long a meat withhold, it can be slaughtered within 7 days:

• The animal should be sent to a slaughterhouse.

• It should be accompanied by an owner’s declaration for casualty slaughter.

• The slaughterhouse should be advised as to the injection site.

The pig may be finished for home consumption:

• The pig once finished MUST NOT BE SOLD.

If the pig cannot be slaughtered within 7 days, has no breeding future and cannot be used for home consumption:

• The pig should be destroyed humanely.

All needles, syringes and containers should be disposed of according to legal requirements.
