FALL 2013

The Shuswap Carvers Society is hosting a unique
contest: they invite you to carve a curling rock.
Curling is a sport in which players slide large
granite stones, which look like oversized hockey
pucks with handles, across a sheet of ice toward a
target, adjusting the slide of the stone with brooms.
The Tim Hortons Brier is the annual Canadian
men’s curling championship; the winners of the
competition represent Canada at the men’s world
curling competitions. In 2014, The Brier will be held
in Kamloops, B.C., which happens to be the home of
five of the eight organizers of the Shuswap School of
Carving and Arts (SSCA).
The SSCA offers a week of woodcarving and other
craft classes each September. As a way to promote
both the school and the art of woodcarving, the
carvers contacted the organizers of the Brier and
arranged the contest. The plan is for some or all of
the carved curling rocks to be displayed during the
competition and signed by members of the 2014
championship teams.
Curling Rock Carving Contest
To participate in the contest, carve a wooden or
stone version of a curling rock. It can be as accurate
or fanciful as you like, but should include something
resembling the handle and measure not more than 3"
across at its widest point. Entries must be received by
the Shuswap Carvers Society no later than January 30,
2014. Prizes for “best carved” and “most creative” will be
awarded. The carvings will be returned after the Brier
in March 2014; you must include return postage to get
your carving back. For rules and more information, visit
the SSCA website, www.bccarvingschool.com, e-mail
kathy.les@telus.net, or call 250-573-2277. Send your
carving to: Curling Rock Carving Contest, c/o SSCA,
5696 Dallas Drive, Kamloops, B.C. V2C 4X1.
