HIFU thermal ablation of gliomas may provide another treatment avenue in those who are not surgical candidates, where tissue for diagnosis is not required, and where mass effect is not a concern. Additionally, it may be useful for augmenting the delivery of targeted agents, or in sensitizing the tumor to current chemotherapeutic drugs. The phase I trials are currently undergoing and will serve to help in establishing the best way to utilize this promising technology, and to add to the body of evidence supporting its safety. While it may be unlikely that HIFU ablation therapy alone will revolutionize the treatment of gliomas, there is an abundance of preclinical data to suggest that therapeutic ultrasound will have a promising future in the treatment of brain tumors.
