Conclusion
ОглавлениеIn summary, hyponatremia is a highly prevalent disorder caused by a wide range of clinical conditions that vary with the setting in which hyponatremia is identified. However, profound hyponatremia leading to an immediate threat to the patient’s life is observed considerably less frequently with a reported prevalence of approximately 1% or less. While hyponatremia upon admission to the hospital should always trigger comprehensive work-up to detect the underlying cause, hospital-acquired hyponatremia must be anticipated, in particular, in the ICU and post-surgery setting. With a clear association of hyponatremia prevalence and old age, the geriatric population represents a distinct subset of patients with regard to etiology and chronicity, which warrants further research.
