Twenty-five years ago, I was eager for my husband-to-be (a normie) to understand AA, so I took him to some open meetings, an experience that not many people get to have in their everyday lives.

Later he was describing us to some of his normie friends: “There’s usually a speaker and lots of laughing and clapping,” he said. “At the end they all hold hands and pray, and then they say, ‘Keep coming back. If it works, it works.’”
