1 This is not to say, of course, that islands actually possess the radical ontological separateness that Katz’s argument implies. A strong case could no doubt be made for saying that islands are ultimately like rivers with respect to their connectedness to and dependence on their surrounding environment.

2 In such instances, river restoration comes into close proximity to bioengineering (Evette et al. 2009) and ecological engineering (Mitsch 2012).

3 Barrett (1994) puts forward a similar argument to the one developed here, albeit without attempting an explicit articulation of the theoretical frameworks of biomimicry and ecological restoration.
